Danielle Lapointe sent this update to the Gold River Buzz this evening – I’m passing it along so that we are all kept current on this issue:
Hello all,
Apologies for the long delay in news regarding the Antler Lake logging. However, I am happy to report that there is mostly good news to pass along. A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between WFP and various provincial government ministries, that WFP will partake in a land swap of Antler and Scout Lake areas for other forest of equal value. This will preserve Antler and Scout Lake areas from being logged. A MOU is not quite a sealed deal, and things may still go awry, but at this point we can celebrate that our backyard old growth trees and recreational areas will remain standing. Thank you to everyone for writing letters and making noise, it obviously helped.
Along with this celebration, we must also grieve the loss of some beautiful old growth giants along the back section of Antler Lake that were fallen before the MOU was signed. They will be a reminder of what might have happened to the whole area slated to be logged. Much work will be needed to clean up the back side of the Antler Lake trail, and we hope that WFP will prioritize cleaning up the logging show portion.
At a local level, we are not ‘in the loop’ anymore regarding the details of the MOU, but if there is more news, I will pass it on.
Thank you again for your energy, voice and vision.

I must admit that I’d been hoping for more participation and comments on the Gold River Buzz since it’s conception, but who knew the subject of dog poop would be the catalyst!
I had three message in my inbox regarding the Great Poop Debate of 2010:

Today Friday Jan 29/2010 I took my dog on a walk around town, got as far as Nimpkish Park took my dog off the leash, grabbed a poop bag and proceded to let him run around the park. I was APPALED to find a lot of elk Poo ,you can tell it from other poo as it comes in scattered groups of between 20 and 50 brown grape sized pellets. Do the OWNERS of THOSE ELK have no MANNERS? Will they not clean up after them? Who knows. I then went on a quest looking for dog poo to compare and after an intensive search could find only find one site near the poo bag station across from the church. It did not look anything like elk poo. Being discouraged at not finding more dog poo to examine I deduced that maby elk poo was mistaken for dog poo. Dog owners KEEP USING THE PARK AND KEEP PICKING UP I think were doing a steller job using the park and cleaning up. If any one knows who is responsible for the elk mayby they could get elk tags from the village so they could clean up too.

We go for a walk almost every day, and while we don’t go to the park, I do agree that there is a lot of dog feces elsewhere around town. Have you ever tried to walk on the highway between Muchalat and Nimpkish Rds? Trust me, stay on the cement!

I have some huge concerns with all the large dogs running loose through the down town area. I”m not sure if there is a bylaw that pet owners should have their dogs on leashes, But I feel that responsible dog owners should have their dogs on a leash. Due to this situation it makes it impossible to walk a small dog on her leash anywhere in this town. I have spoken to one individual and his response was to just deal with it.
On Saturday I posted about the Local Jewellery Fundraiser for Haiti – here’s a quick update in case readers haven’t seen Desiree commenting with current bids:
As of Saturday the highest bid was $200, then $225, then $250 and now a whopping $300!
To quote Desiree, she is ‘over the moon’ at the generosity of others, and wants to remind everyone that bidding will be open until Wednesday, January 20th at 5pm Pacific time.
For more pictures of the gorgeous sapphire and diamond ring up for auction (as well as the Australian Opal earrings which Des is throwing in as well) please click here to see the original post.
OMG!! It just crossed my mind that my birthday is in September, so my birthstone is (you guessed it) Sapphire…. so maybe it’s my husband bidding on this gorgeous SAPPHIRE ring? He had my wedding rings designed with sapphires integrated, so wouldn’t this pretty little bobble look fantastic on my middle finger next to my wedding set? I think so!
But if he’s not one of the bidders….hmmm – I think I shall show him my middle finger anyway!

New Gold River resident Desiree Lockhart has created an online auction with 100% of the funds raised going to help the victims in Haiti.
For those of you who don’t know Desiree, she is Cst. Lockhart’s wife, and moved to Gold River with her husband and two young children this past September. You may have seen her out walking with her children, or tearing up the ice on Thursdays at the Gold River Curling Club! Read on:
“In light of the tragedy in Haiti, we have made a donation to the Red Cross within our current small means, but I would like to be able to do much more. After some brainstorming I have decided to offer up a piece from my jewellery box for an auction style fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going to the Red Cross. I will provide a receipt to verify this. The ring I chose to offer is a beautiful blue Sapphire and Diamond ring in 14 karat yellow gold. There is a larger emerald cut center Sapphire, with smaller round Sapphire and Diamonds claw set in a raised step setting. The ring was appraised in 2005 for $645, by one of the lead gemologists in Calgary, Alberta. The center Sapphire is a 1/2 carat, with an additional 0.18 carat in round Sapphires and 0.13 carat in round cut Diamonds, for a total weight of 0.81 carat. The appraisal will be included with the ring. I am ready to part with it in order to be able to do more for the people of Haiti. They have a long, long road ahead and every little bit helps. I will have it available for bids until January 20, 5pm Pacific time, with a starting bid of $50. If you are interested please send me a message and I will update the comment section if there are bids. I am also linking it over to my blog to hopefully increase the bidding potential. I really hope to raise at least $200-$300, and as an incentive to help reach that goal, if the winning bid is over $200, I will also send you a beautiful pair of Australian Opal Mosaic style stud earrings set in 14 karat yellow gold-with an approximate retail value of $175-$225. (I worked in a jewellery store for 7 years but it’s been awhile.) Please consider it, not only will it help the people of Haiti in this tragic time but you’ll get two new beautiful pieces for your collection!”

Please help Desiree to raise money for the Haitian victims – it’s a win-win situation as you are helping those in need and getting some lovely pieces of jewelry in exchange!
Desiree is accepting bids via email – desmeray@yahoo.com, and she will post the current bids here on the Buzz. There are already two bids on the ring – the first was $75, and the current high bid is $200! Very exciting and heartwarming! Desiree will be accepting bids until January 20th at 5pm Pacific time.

Some of you may remember reading in The Record about an elk that was illegally shot near the Nesook log dump turnoff in September 2008. Following is the decision handed down to the poacher.

Conservation officers are hoping a hefty fine handed to a man who shot an elk near Gold River will send a message to other would-be poachers.
Lower Mainland resident Xiao Zheng pleaded guilty in Richmond provincial court to hunting during a closed season, hunting without a license and leaving the edible portions of an animal.
He was fined $9,001, of which $9,000 will go to the Habitat Conservation Trust Fund.
“It’s a very significant fine,” said Ben York, a sergeant with the Conservation Officer Service.
In addition, Zheng was ordered to forfeit gear confiscated by conservation officers at the time of the elk shooting.
“That’s between $5,000 and $6,000 worth of gear. There was a rifle, hunting clothes, a GPS, two-way radios and hunting knives — anything that was used in the commission of the offense,” York said.
Zheng and two others were charged after forestry workers in the woods near Gold River last December saw three men shoot and kill a bull elk in a closed area, during the closed season, and called RCMP and conservation officers.
The men were intercepted and all three were charged, said York. However, Zheng admitted being the shooter, so it is not known whether the other two charges will proceed.
Elk herds around Gold River are intensively managed and there is only a small, limited-entry hunt, York said.

As I mentioned the other day, the theme in Gold River this year is definitely about shopping local as much as possible and supporting our local businesses and enabling them to stay viable.
To encourage Gold Riverites to shop local, the Gold River Super Valu has a few different incentives going on right now.
For example, there are many items that are the same price in the Superstore flyer and the Super Valu flyer. Do you see something you need in the Superstore flyer at a great deal? If so, chances are you can get it locally at the very same price! You will see ‘Same Price as Superstore’ signs around the store so you know which items are priced the same.
Also going on at our local Super Valu is a huge white tag event offering a savings of $1 or more on over 250 different items. A few examples of the savings you’ll find are:
- Crest toothpaste – Reg $3.49 now $1.99
- Breyer (100 cal) ice cream sandwiches – Reg $9.99 now $7.99
- Dream Whip – Reg $4.49 now $2.99
- PC Blue Menu jam – Reg $10.29 now $8.99
- Red Ruby grapefruit juice – Reg $9.69 now $7.99
And hundreds more are marked down as well!
Of course don’t forget – it’s turkey buck time! For every $25 spent (not including tobacco or lotto) you’ll receive a coupon for $1 off a butter basted young turkey.
White tagged items are ‘while supplies last’, so shop early to ensure a great price!
