Two months ago I posted about a new Art Gallery which opened in Gold River – Haven Gallery. Along with a successful Summer season, the Gallery now has it’s own website: Haven Gallery. Owner Haven Moreton says:
Please go and take a look and don’t miss the Artist’s Gallery – which showcases lovely works from local artists. Email This Post

via Joanne Folkins: As most of the town knows, Irene Anderson, our village’s garden centre owner, has become very ill. Because of this, she is needing a home for her beloved cats. Is it possible for one of us in town to adopt them? We really don’t want to take them to the SPCA. They are 7-year-old Flame Point Balinese (a Siamese offshoot), brother and sister, who are strongly bonded to each other; thus, they should be adopted together. The male is the talkative and inquisitive one of the pair. They must be kept as indoor cats as they have never been outside. All of their belongings will come with them. If anyone wants to adopt them, could you please phone me at home or at work (GRSS). There will be no fee for taking them in. Joanne Folkins Email This Post
She must have known I was talking about her late last night! Around 4:30 this afternoon my oldest yelled at me from the kitchen to grab my camera and come quick! Mama and two cubs had easily hopped the neighbours fence and were slowly meandering through their backyard. I called the RCMP because of the time of day, and I could also hear people biking and walking along the road behind our house. It’s such a catch-22…. you want the bears to be able to go on their way safely, and for the little ones to have the chance to grow up. But if someone happened to surprise that Mama and be mauled, or worse……. The RCMP came right away, but Mama had already changed direction and was right outside our fence. He managed to convince her it was time to move along (he asked very politely Here’s hoping she’ll decide to stay in the bush…
As is usual at this time of year, black bears are here in full force in Gold River it seems. It is always concerning, however this year there is at least one female with cubs wandering through town. Conservation officers have been in the Village and have been observing and speaking to various residents. According to local RCMP, Conservation officers found that while most Gold River residents are very ‘bear aware’, we need to do better. They discovered carports with unsecured deep freezes (bears can open these!), as well as full garbage cans in carports and at the side of houses. In one recent incident a bear pried the doors of a metal shed open and pulled out the garbage cans inside. Conservation officers have concluded that we have created our bear problem with the food sources we are leaving for them. I took one loop around town with my camera the other morning…
Conservation officers as well as local RCMP are making efforts to deal with these bears to preserve public safety, but in the meantime are advising the public to be extremely cautious when walking and to always be aware of your surroundings so as to not be surprised by a bear. (or vice versa) To report human wildlife interactions where public safety is at risk, please call 1-877-952-7277. Links of interest: Human Wildlife Conflicts Response Policy Email This Post
