Covanta / Green Island Energy News

After hearing about the news story which aired on GlobalTV (I believe) which all but came right out and said that the Covanta / Green Island Energy power plant project is finished here in Gold River, I decided to ask Mayor Anderson for more information.

If you read the Resident Spotlight this week, you’ll know that he touched on this subject a bit, and stated that the news reports were inaccurate, and that he encourages Gold River residents to ask Council for correct and up to date information.

Here is what Craig told me today:

“After talking with Thomas Lyons this past Tuesday he said, and I quote, ‘Covanta is committed to having a power project in Gold River and fully expect to win the Request for Proposal from Metro Vancouver.’

Mayor Anderson also stated that Council will be meeting with Covanta / Green Island Energy on Tuesday January 26th to be fully updated and briefed.

Gold River Super Valu lowering prices & offering specials to keep shoppers local

As I mentioned the other day, the theme in Gold River this year is definitely about shopping local as much as possible and supporting our local businesses and enabling them to stay viable.

To encourage Gold Riverites to shop local, the Gold River Super Valu has a few different incentives going on right now.

For example, there are many items that are the same price in the Superstore flyer and the Super Valu flyer.  Do you see something you need in the Superstore flyer at a great deal?  If so, chances are you can get it locally at the very same price! You will see ‘Same Price as Superstore’ signs around the store so you know which items are priced the same.

Also going on at our local Super Valu is a huge white tag event offering a savings of $1 or more on over 250 different items.  A few examples of the savings you’ll find are:

  • Crest toothpaste – Reg $3.49 now $1.99
  • Breyer (100 cal) ice cream sandwiches – Reg $9.99 now $7.99
  • Dream Whip – Reg $4.49 now $2.99
  • PC Blue Menu jam – Reg $10.29 now $8.99
  • Red Ruby grapefruit juice – Reg $9.69 now $7.99

And hundreds more are marked down as well!

Of course don’t forget – it’s turkey buck time!  For every $25 spent (not including tobacco or lotto) you’ll receive a coupon for $1 off a butter basted young turkey.

White tagged items are ‘while supplies last’, so shop early to ensure a great price!

Reasons to shop local

shop_localAs the holidays and busy shopping season approach, I’d like to take a minute to remind everyone about the value of shopping locally.

I’ll argue any day that spending a bit more in your local shops contributes more to the health of our community than sending your dollars to big corporate retailers elsewhere.  Dollars spent in Gold River stay in Gold River; by shopping here, we are investing in our community.  Money spent outside of Gold River contributes to the erosion of our beautiful Village.  It’s a pretty simple principle, but easy to forget when times are tough.

In a nutshell, when you shop at an independent, locally owned business, our entire community benefits:

  • Local businesses create jobs for us and our neighbours.
  • Buying local means less packaging, less transportation and a smaller carbon footprint.
  • Local retailers are our friends and neighbours – support them and they’ll support you.
  • Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of the big box stores. (think for a minute just how much our local retailers give to the community)
  • Local businesses provide a good majority of our jobs here in Gold River.
  • Local business owners invest in the community and have a vested interest in the future of Gold River – it’s their home too!

Of course, there are some things that just can’t be found here in Gold River and we need to go out of town for them – that can’t be helped.  But as much as possible in these tough economic times, we need to keep our dollars here in Gold River.  The big box stores can afford a drop in Christmas sales and will be around no matter what.

Local Gold River businesses need us more than ever this year, and I know we want them to be here in our community for years to come!

Logging plan another blow to Gold River

Antler/Scout Lake

I received a message yesterday from concerned Gold River residents asking for the word to be spread regarding the Government’s lack of action on this issue.

From what I’ve read and been told, viable solutions have been put forward by the community working in conjunction with Western Forest Products, but the Government has been painfully slow and continuously asks WFP for more time.  Western has been amazing through all of this, and continues to be involved in the process, along with concerned citizens, local Government and First Nations.  Industry and the community have been working together, despite the difficult economic times in Forestry – everyone wants to see a mutually beneficial agreement without a further loss of jobs to the community.  To that end, here is the message I received:

Hello Gold River residents and friends.

The trees around Antler Lake have started to fall this week.

Due to government incompetence and inactivity, no agreement was solidified between Western FOrest Products (WFP) and the BC government.

Now we need to wake up the government with a loud scream from Gold River. All they need to do is put into action the plans that WFC, the community, First Nations and government all worked on together.

Please see the attached document which outlines the key points of what WE can write into letters to the government, but more importantly, the media. The media will see each letter that we send them, as representing about 30 people who believe in the issue, but didn’t write a letter. THerefore, the more we send and in an immediate wave, the more impact it will have.

Address your letter to Premier Gordon Campbell and send it to:

1. David Obee (Times Colonist) dobee@tc.canwest.com
2. localnews@tc.canwest.com

CC the letter to:
premier@gov.bc.ca
Minister, ENV ENV:EX <ENV.Minister@gov.bc.ca>
Minister, AL AL:EX <AL.Minister@gov.bc.ca>
Bell, Pat FOR:EX <Pat.Bell@gov.bc.ca>

If you would like to also write an “Opinion” piece, please send it to:

1. David Obee (see above)
2. fmihlar@vancouversun.com

Please write and send your letters as soon as possible. Your voice matters.

Green Island Energy & Covanta Energy

“Keep waste from going to waste”

goldriverThat’s the mantra of Covanta Energy, who is partnered with Green Island Energy to bring an advanced Energy-from-Waste project to Gold River.

Now, if you’re like me (the average semi-informed citizen), you’ve been hearing about this project for what seems like forever.  I know that it’s got something to do with burning Vancouver’s garbage, but that’s where my wisdom ends.  Everyone has abandoned talking about the economic boom this will bring to our community and the jobs that will be created.   So I decided to do a quick Google and see if I could educate myself a bit.

Turns out it’s a pretty cool process, and most definitely an innovative and ingenious one.  And when you think about it – surprisingly simplistic.  Turn our garbage into energy….. well yeah, it’s about time!

Here’s the basic process:

EFW_process2

You can check out the Gold River project page on Covanta’s website to learn more.  The website states:

With the execution of several key waste disposal agreements, construction on the project could begin by the end of this year and commence operations in 2012.

I know a lot of community members have all but given up on ever seeing this project come to Gold River, but perhaps all is not lost and good things really do come to those who wait.
