As I’ve mentioned before, the Gold River Minor Hockey Association is always looking for ways to raise money in order to keep registration fees affordable for all Gold River parents.
GRMHA is now selling these reusable grocery bags with the Hawks logo:

You can show your support for Gold River hockey and help to do your part for the environment at the same time!
Bags are $5 each and any GRMHA member can hook you up with one!

As many of you may have heard, the Foursquare Church is sending a group of youth to Mexico for 13 days over Spring Break.
There will be teens going from Gold River, Campbell River and Courtenay/Comox. They will be spending their time painting buildings, cleaning, and doing odd jobs for Campo Christiano, where they will be staying.
They will be having a BBQ and bake sale tomorrow, January 28th starting at 3:30pm in the Gold River plaza to raise money for their food, travel and gifts for the children.
Please come out and support your local teens for the trip of a lifetime!
On Saturday I posted about the Local Jewellery Fundraiser for Haiti – here’s a quick update in case readers haven’t seen Desiree commenting with current bids:
As of Saturday the highest bid was $200, then $225, then $250 and now a whopping $300!
To quote Desiree, she is ‘over the moon’ at the generosity of others, and wants to remind everyone that bidding will be open until Wednesday, January 20th at 5pm Pacific time.
For more pictures of the gorgeous sapphire and diamond ring up for auction (as well as the Australian Opal earrings which Des is throwing in as well) please click here to see the original post.
OMG!! It just crossed my mind that my birthday is in September, so my birthstone is (you guessed it) Sapphire…. so maybe it’s my husband bidding on this gorgeous SAPPHIRE ring? He had my wedding rings designed with sapphires integrated, so wouldn’t this pretty little bobble look fantastic on my middle finger next to my wedding set? I think so!
But if he’s not one of the bidders….hmmm – I think I shall show him my middle finger anyway!

Gold River Grade 12 student Destiny Hutchinson gets a ‘warm fuzzy’ for her initiative, compassion and warm heart.
Destiny has taken in upon herself to step up and raise money for the Haitian earthquake victims. Most of us think about doing something, but soon get busy with our own lives, and while we may donate, it takes a special person to organize and ASK for our donations!
The money Destiny collects will be sent as a donation to the International Red Cross to provide medical supplies, food, water, blankets and basic necessities. Her mother (Rhonda Hutchinson) will use her credit card and send the grand total of all monies donated to the International Red Cross on behalf of all contributors.
Destiny asks that we all PLEASE HELP by donating whatever we can give – she will be accepting cash donations at Gold River Secondary School and Super Valu, and will be keeping a list of all names and amounts donated.
Even loonies and toonies add up Gold Riverites! Lets make Destiny proud and give what we can!
New Gold River resident Desiree Lockhart has created an online auction with 100% of the funds raised going to help the victims in Haiti.
For those of you who don’t know Desiree, she is Cst. Lockhart’s wife, and moved to Gold River with her husband and two young children this past September. You may have seen her out walking with her children, or tearing up the ice on Thursdays at the Gold River Curling Club! Read on:
“In light of the tragedy in Haiti, we have made a donation to the Red Cross within our current small means, but I would like to be able to do much more. After some brainstorming I have decided to offer up a piece from my jewellery box for an auction style fundraiser with 100% of the proceeds going to the Red Cross. I will provide a receipt to verify this. The ring I chose to offer is a beautiful blue Sapphire and Diamond ring in 14 karat yellow gold. There is a larger emerald cut center Sapphire, with smaller round Sapphire and Diamonds claw set in a raised step setting. The ring was appraised in 2005 for $645, by one of the lead gemologists in Calgary, Alberta. The center Sapphire is a 1/2 carat, with an additional 0.18 carat in round Sapphires and 0.13 carat in round cut Diamonds, for a total weight of 0.81 carat. The appraisal will be included with the ring. I am ready to part with it in order to be able to do more for the people of Haiti. They have a long, long road ahead and every little bit helps. I will have it available for bids until January 20, 5pm Pacific time, with a starting bid of $50. If you are interested please send me a message and I will update the comment section if there are bids. I am also linking it over to my blog to hopefully increase the bidding potential. I really hope to raise at least $200-$300, and as an incentive to help reach that goal, if the winning bid is over $200, I will also send you a beautiful pair of Australian Opal Mosaic style stud earrings set in 14 karat yellow gold-with an approximate retail value of $175-$225. (I worked in a jewellery store for 7 years but it’s been awhile.) Please consider it, not only will it help the people of Haiti in this tragic time but you’ll get two new beautiful pieces for your collection!”

Please help Desiree to raise money for the Haitian victims – it’s a win-win situation as you are helping those in need and getting some lovely pieces of jewelry in exchange!
Desiree is accepting bids via email – desmeray@yahoo.com, and she will post the current bids here on the Buzz. There are already two bids on the ring – the first was $75, and the current high bid is $200! Very exciting and heartwarming! Desiree will be accepting bids until January 20th at 5pm Pacific time.
The Gold River Skating Club is holding a raffle and one of the prizes is a Playstation 3.

Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5 and are available from any GRSC member or at the Clayworks Cafe.
