Many people have emailed the Buzz asking how they can help in regards to missing person Justin Bergquist.
While I am unaware how residents can physically help, if you are a friend of Justin’s family and his friends, you can be there for emotional support, and whatever else the family may need.
- Avoid cliches such as ‘it’s alright’ or ‘I know how you must feel’. Such statements, although well meaning can be very upsetting to family and friends.
- If you wish to help, offer to do a specific task. Do you need me to get groceries/the mail/do the banking? Can I help with the housework? Mow the lawn?
- If you wish to offer food, ask what the family may need and/or like. (They may already have two dozen casseroles, and have no idea what to do with one more.)
- Simply listening and being an ear is often the best help you can give, but make sure to listen in an active, non-judgmental and empathetic way.
- Allow the person to express emotions of anger or other such ‘negative’ feelings – this is normal and natural. As a friend you are meant to be a shoulder, an ear and a caring non-judgement presence.
- You are not meant to chat-up, cheer-up or to entertain in order to distract that person from their worry and stress.
Please remember that everyone deals with trauma differently. The key is kindness and support.

Police are well into day two of the search for missing 21 year old Justin Bergquist.
Efforts are being made by the Nootka Sound RCMP as well as the Campbell River Search and Rescue team. The RCMP Police Dog Section is also in Gold River to assist in the ground search.
Due to inclement weather conditions, Comox RCMP Air Services are not able to conduct an aerial search at this time. Efforts will be made tomorrow should the weather conditions change.
Family and friends of Justin are actively searching as well, and also contacting friends and relatives in an effort to locate him.
Again, 21 year old Justin Bergquist was last seen walking alone near the upper Heber bridge at approximately 11:45pm on Friday May 13th, heading in the direction of the trailer court.
Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Nootka Sound RCMP at 250-283-2227.

A digital camera memory card was found in the parking lot of Lady Falls. Judging by the dates the images were created (Jan/Feb 2010), it looks like it may have been there for over a year!
If this is your memory card, please feel free to email rhondacallow [at] gmail [dot] com and let me know one of the following:
1. What pictures are on the card
2. The type of camera that was used with the card
3. The brand and size capacity of the card
