I was talking to old Rose the other day, and she was moaning about her kids constantly roughhousing. She told them they’d better cut it out because if one of them got seriously hurt she’d have to drive to Campbell River as it was the weekend and the local Health Clinic was closed.
Of course I said, ‘What the heck are you going on about Rose? The Clinic has an after hours emergency number – didn’t you know that?” Obviously, she didn’t.
So I thought it might be a good thing to mention on the site, for all the new people who have moved to Gold River in the past while, and might not know how things work around here.
Regarding the Gold River Health Clinic, (and someone correct me if I’m wrong please!) if you have a medical concern after hours that doesn’t warrant calling the Ambulance, you can call the regular Clinic phone number (283-2541), and listen to the message for further instructions. The recording gives you a pager # which you can call and leave a message for a local medical professional. Leave your name and phone number and someone will call you back as soon as possible. If the situation is something that cannot wait until regular office hours, it will be addressed as per the discretion of medical personnel.
What I have done in the past is to call the BC Nurse Line (1-866-215-4700) first and talk to a Registered Nurse to get their opinion. If they advise that medical attention is needed right away then I’ll call the Clinic and the pager # and go from there.
I have really got a kick out of the response in the past when the Nurse on the hotline had asked if getting in to see a Doctor within the next 48 hours was possible. When I answered, ‘Oh yes, no problem at all!’, they immediately asked where I lived and told me how lucky I was.
Of course, I am well aware of that fact.
I have just spoken with PEP Coordinator Jim Bugar and RCMP Sergeant Jason Fiddler – this is the current information from both gentlemen:
Following the earthquake this morning in Chile, Nootka Sound (as well as all of Coastal BC) is on a Tsunami Advisory.
Please note, this is an advisory – not a warning.
Officials are forecasting a 1 foot surge for our area with probable strong currents, arriving at approximately 3:11pm this afternoon.
For up to date information on this situation, please see the Provincial Emergency Program website. The Tsunami Information bulletin is located on the main page.
~I will add updates to this post as needed~
- Thank you to all those who have sent photos, maps, ideas, updates, etc. I am so far behind, but am trying my best to catch up!
- The winner of the Village raffle for tickets to the women’s qualifying bobsled event was James Frame – congratulations James!
- The Hubby and I had a wonderful time at the Valentine Dinner/Mexico Fundraiser last Sunday at Odika. Everything was delicious, and it was so nice to see so many people enjoying dinner and supporting the Mexico mission! Thanks so much to everyone who made it happen! (And thanks to our dinner partners as well!)
- I missed the Skating Carnival last night (that damn chicken is still haunting me!), but heard it was fantastic and well done. I also received some pics, so will have those posted soon.
- In the What’s up for the weekend? post I forgot to mention the free family skate on Sunday from 6:00-7:30pm.
- My Hispanic maid Consuela didn’t show up yesterday to clean my house.
What the hell Consuela? Between kids, work, hockey, a slobbery dog and bad chicken, this place is a mess!

If so, you’re in luck!
In addition to the Valentine dinner at Odika, the Northgate Church will have childcare available at the Church in the evening of the 14th. They will have qualified teenagers who have taken the babysitting course on site, as well as an adult supervisor.
The cost will be by donation, and the service will be available from 6:00-9:00pm. This will be a fundraiser for the Mexico trip that four of our Gold River youth will be going on. It is open to anyone and everyone – not just those attending the dinner.
There will be fun games, a movie, snacks and drinks!

Nootka Sound RCMP are advising motorists to stay off Highway 28 today unless absolutely necessary. It is snowing heavily in sections, and roads are very slippery and slushy.
There have already been two motor vehicle accidents on the highway today, due to slippery road conditions. Thankfully no one was seriously injured.

The snow starts about 5km out of town, just past Saunders Bridge, and by the time I got to the Crest Crags area, I decided it was time to turn around.

Barb Dick emailed me this morning hoping to put the word out regarding her son’s hockey jacket:
My son’s Gold River Hawks hockey jacket is missing/lost/misplaced… (he is 8 yrs old after all). It’s a boys large with the name WILSON on the sleeve. I have looked high & low in all possible areas that it may have been dropped or left behind – from the school, to the arena, to the pool, at home, even at his Grandma’s house.
Logan would be so grateful to get his jacket back. He last remembers having it in school. I have been checking every day, but nothing. I was so busy with everything else, I didn’t notice what exact day he wasn’t wearing it. He is pretty upset that he doesn’t have it, so please if you have seen it, found it or tripped on it, please call me @ 283-7149.
We would be very happy to get it back. Thank you.
If anyone has come across it, you can give Barb a call or email me here at the Buzz (via the email icon to the right) and I’ll get the message to her.

Super Valu would like to let Gold River residents know that our flyers will no longer be in the weekly papers which the Post Office leaves on the counter. We will have flyers in the front of the store for you to grab as you come in, and shoppers can also click on our ad here on the Buzz to see our current weekly specials and sales. Like all businesses in these economic times, we need to find ways to cut costs and maximize our advertising dollars.
Through the terrible demise of one business comes opportunity for another. We have become the lucky beneficiaries of some great second hand equipment from the Super Valu in Campbell River. You will notice our new Deli case at the front of the store as well as the BBQ chicken machine and warmer. There are also new bread racks, pop bottle return container and loads of other little things sprinkled throughout the store. Please tell us what you think when you see the new stuff! As I mentioned, the only cost to us was the great groups of people we had to bribe to help us move the various items from Campbell River to Gold River. On that note, we would like to send out a heartfelt thank you to all our friends for giving us a helping hand when we needed you. You guys are the best!
Finally, the new Debit/Credit card system has been installed bringing us a little more up to date. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience as that system was installed on New Years Eve. Unfortunately we had no choice as to the timeline of that little debacle – the good news is that it’s all done now and working well.
Thank you Gold River for your continued support!
