The Gold River Greyhawks will be back on the ice again Saturday night (Oct 24th), this time taking on Port Alberni. Let’s hope this team actually has some oldtimers on the roster, or we may need to have the EMT’s standing by…. hehe.
After the game, the Greyhawks have arranged entertainment in the form of Billy Goodman & The Skunk Hollow Band, who will be playing upstairs in the Arena Lounge from 9:30pm – 1:30am.
The Skunk Hollow Band is from Campbell River and comes highly recommended, so head on down to the arena and cheer on your Gold River Greyhawks from 7:00-9:00pm, and then join them for socializing and dancing afterward.
Note: There will be a cover charge to help pay for the band.
It was a great game and a tremendous effort on the part of our Gold River Greyhawks, but Comox Valley emerged victorious beating the Oldtimers 6-2 last night.
In defense of the Greyhawks, the Comox Valley team had more young guns on their team than they did old guys. I noticed only one player from Comox who was balding, and there was not a grey hair among them! On top of their obvious youthfulness, they had a kick-ass goalie who made save after save!
Goal scorers for Gold River were Kevin Leduc and Alberto Girotto. Doug Meske scored a goal as well, but (ahem), I think it’s one goal he’d rather forget
Hey – it happens to the best of them!
The Gold River Greyhawks (aka ‘ The Oldtimers’) will be on the ice again this weekend!
After a near shut-out (4-1) against Campbell River October 4th, the Greyhawks are optimistic and looking forward to taking on the Comox Valley team.
The puck drops at 7:00pm tomorrow night (October 17th) at the Gerry Morgan Memorial Centre. The lounge will be open upstairs, so you can cheer on your Gold River team in a warm room with a nice cold drink!
See you there!
Dorothy Savey emailed me the other day to let me know that the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is going to be fund raising for our Gold River hockey teams!
There will be a quarter bingo on Sunday October 25, at the band office on the Tsaxana reserve. Make sure and bring your quarters for the first turnout as they may not have enough coins the first time around to make change.
There will also be a concession so pop/chips/coffee etc., will be available.
Step up and participate by attending the bingo! There will be lots of fun to be had (and maybe a little money too), and all the while helping to support our local hockey.
There must have been a sale on arthritis medication somewhere because the Gold River Oldtimers were in tip top shape yesterday afternoon, beating Campbell River 4-1!

Ken Pringle and Michael Lott officiated and did a great job. (Although Kenny must be hoarse today from yelling – ‘OFFSIDE! OFFSIDE! OFFSIDE!” (I guess it’s not just the kids who need reminding )The first goal was scored by Rick Messer – other goal scorers included Glen Little and Jim Murphy. (Who did I miss?)
It was fun to watch, and have a nice cuppa java at Moe’s. Now if only those arena heaters worked!
The Gold River Minor Hockey Association (like many other sports associations in the province) has lost 75% of it’s government grant money this year. Therefore you will probably be seeing much more in the way of fund raising, as the association needs to make up for those lost funds.
Right now GRMHA is selling these beautiful Spirit of Hockey 15 month calendars. The calendars contain lovely hockey photos that can be framed, and also have a stats area on each monthly page where your child can enter their goals, assists, shots and shutouts.
Calendars are $20 each – please contact Anita Rose (or any minor hockey player) to purchase.
Makes a great Christmas gift!
The Gold River Oldtimer’s are brushing off the cobwebs, lathering on the A535 and hitting the ice this Sunday at 1:00pm against Campbell River!
Come on out and support the local guys! And the best part? Moe’s Kitchen is open for the season!
The Gold River Minor Hockey bottle drive is tomorrow night!
Last year we made almost $3000 with this fundraiser, and we really need all the help we can get this year.
The kids will pick up your bottles curbside, so please have them out before 6pm!
A great way to clean out your garage and get rid of all those Summer empties, (don’t try to pretend….. we know you have tons!) and help out the kids at the same time!
Don’t forget – Monday Sept 21st starting @ 6pm.
There was really no other way around it – even with the tough economic times Gold River is facing – we had no choice. We’ve lost 75% of our usual grant monies from the Government, and we really needed that $$.
We raised fees back to what they were a few years ago – $150 for Mites, and $275 for all other divisions. This is a $50 raise across the board. Still, it’s $100 cheaper than Campbell River.
The executive for the year are:
- President: Ellena Gjesdal
- VP – vacant
- Treasurer: Stephen Larre
- Referee in Chief: Jim Murphy
- Referee Scheduler: Carmel Murphy
- Risk Manager: Janne Lake
- Way & Means: Anita Rose
- Equipment Manager: Elisa Sommerfeld
- Secretary/Registrar: Kyra Fiddler
- Ice Scheduler: Cathy Meske
I know they’re all looking forward to a great season of hockey in Gold River!
Summer seems so long gone it’s not even funny.
Perhaps it’s because school started late this year, I don’t know, but everything’s in full swing already. First day of school today, and the first Gold River Minor Hockey Association (GRMHA) meeting tonight.
I won’t lie – the 2009/10 hockey season is looking scary for Gold River. No Gaming Grant yet, and we have no idea whether it will ever come. The association relies heavily on this government funding in order to keep our registration fees at an affordable level. Campbell River and other associations on the Island are pushing (and have been for the past few years) $400 for yearly fees. We have kept ours at $225 for the past two years. I’m not sure if we’re going to be able to do that again this season.
Keep your fingers crossed!
