Christmas/Winter Odds & Sods

My bookmark folder is overflowing (thanks to Pinterest), so I thought I would do a little bit of early Spring cleaning and share some of the neat Christmassy ideas I’ve found.

Blow Frozen Bubbles – we haven’t tried this one yet, (although we’ve had ample opportunity) but it seems like a neat way to keep the kids busy on a cold day outdoors.

As long as the temperature is below zero, the bubbles will freeze and shatter when they fall to the ground!

Make a puffy snowman:  Use equal parts white glue and shaving cream.

Easy outdoor (or indoor) Christmas tree:  Wrap wire tomato cages in lights, flip upside down – voila!

A different type of wreath for your door:  An old picture frame (painted to your liking) ribbon for a bow and a few Christmas decorations!  Easy peasy!

Here’s an easy popsicle stick craft for your door – simple and pretty!

Here’s a neat way to make snowflakes – dip the end of an evergreen branch in white paint!

A great recipe for Christmas morning:  North Pole Strawberry Smoothie

INGREDIENTS:

1 package (10 oz) frozen strawberries in syrup, partially thawed and undrained
1/4 cup water
2 cups vanilla frozen yogurt
2 tablespoons vanilla reduced-fat yogurt
1 strawberry-flavored or peppermint candy cane, finely crushed
Green decorating gel

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place strawberries and water in blender. Cover and blend on medium-high speed until slushy. Blend on medium speed until smooth. Transfer to 2-cup measure.

2. Wash and dry blender. Place frozen yogurt and reduced-fat yogurt in blender. Cover and blend on medium speed until smooth.

3. Place crushed candy cane on small plate. Pipe decorating gel around rim of two 12-ounce glasses. Dip rims into crushed candy.

4. Carefully pour yogurt mixture and strawberries at the same time into glasses, creating a half-and-half design. Serve with large drinking straws if desired.

Last but not least, don’t forget the free site Magic Santa.

You can personalize a video where the big guy himself receives your child’s Christmas letter!

Poppy Cupcakes

I spied these creative cupcakes on our resident Cupcake Queen’s facebook page and asked if she would share the recipe.

If you’ve ever been to a school function, or a bake sale and saw some cupcakes that knocked your socks off, you can bet they were made by Karen Creelman!  Thanks Karen for sharing!

WHITE CAKE RECIPE

  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 3 eggs
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla

Cream margarine, shortening and sugar until light and fluffy.  Add milk and hot water – beat well.  Add one egg, 1 cup flour, baking powder and salt to mixture, blend in well.  Then add one egg and 1 cup flour and blend in again.  Then add the last egg, last cup of flour and vanilla.  Beat for 5 minutes.  Spray with pam or line cake pan with wax paper.  Bake at 325 F for 1- 1/4 hours, or until knife comes out clean.  Makes a 9 x 9 cake or approximately 12 cupcakes.

To decorate, use white frosting, Swedish berries (or fresh raspberries) and a chocolate chip for the center.
