Hello all, just a quick update from Mexico.
First off, next time we go somewhere, remind me to bring my laptop, as trying to post on this iPad drives a person to drink! I just don’t get what you Apple lovers see in this thing.
Second, if anyone running for Council, Mayor or School Board wants something posted, please send your little ditty to my personal email, (kyrafiddlerATgmail.com) as I can’t get into the GR Buzz one on this stupid iPad. Also, please make sure what you send is correct, as I will be posting “as is”.
Third, we are all having a great time here in Puerto Vallarta. No one has been arrested yet, contracted Montezuma’s Revenge or broken anything. A few sunburns, and perhaps a sore head or two in the mornings (not me, I promise), so all is good and par for the course at an all inclusive.
Finally, we heard flurries are in the forecast for Gold River! I would make a joke, but that is just not funny for the beginning of November.

I’ll be (mostly) away from a computer for the next 10 days or thereabouts, so the Buzz may be a bit quiet in the interm.
Please feel free to continue to send things you’d like posted to infoATgoldriverbuzzDOTcom and I’ll get to it as soon as the margaritas and mariachi allow.
It takes a Village to raise a child (or so the saying goes), and as mine will be staying in Gold River with Grandma, please also feel free to give them a swift kick in the you-know-what if they need it!

Two wins, two losses – not too bad for a rag tag group of Mounties who had never played together before arriving in New York/New Jersey for the 2011 World Police & Fire Games.
As you can imagine, Hurricane Irene put a big wrench in organizer’s plans – first with all Mass Transit in both NY and NJ shutting down at noon on Saturday, and then floods and numerous power outages following the storm.
The RCMP Buffalo team was made up of Mounties from BC to Quebec, and I think they did better than even they expected given the circumstances. They lost their first game 6-1 against the Quebec Provincial Police, won their second 4-1 against US Homeland Security and then won the third game 5-4 against Toronto Fire. This put them into the quarter finals against New Haven Combo (Police and Fire – The New Haven Guns and Hoses…. get it? He he!), where they lost 5-2.
Besides hockey and Irene, we did mange to get a bit of free time for some sightseeing, going into Manhattan a few times, and down to Hoboken NJ (home of The Cake Boss). The cannoli’s really ARE delicious! Although I was naively disappointed that no one from the show was actually working there.
All in all, a great trip. I didn’t manage to get to the Museum of Natural History, which I regret, as I was really hoping to see the Whaler’s Shrine from Yuquot. So nice to be home however, where it is relaxing and quiet.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Gold River resident Jason Fiddler will be participating in the 2011 World Police & Fire Games in New York City.
Strangely enough, he invited me to go with him, so the Buzz will be a bit on the quiet side for the next 10 days. I will have internet access, so if you need something posted I will do my best via chubby fingers on the iPad.
For those interested in following along with scores, hockey has it’s own website for the games – WPFG Ice Hockey. The team to watch is the RCMP Buffalo’s (Click ‘Senior Division’ on the right hand side, then look for the team name in D1 Pool B) You can also search via the ‘Schedule’ link and see scores, etc., after the game is finished.
They do a Round Robin first and games are as follows:
They are guaranteed three more games after these depending on how they sit in the standings.
Wish us luck! (I’ll need most of the luck I think, as the sheer size of New York is making this small town girl sweat already!)

The Buzz has been (and will be) a little quiet for the next few days, as I am out and about and not near a computer.
If you send an email or a request for something to be posted, please expect a delay of 2-3 days.
Thanks!

I’ve been without since Sunday evening, and finally this morning….. the wireless is working again!
To all those who have sent emails – I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Wow – who knew you could sweat in the rain?
We arrived last Thursday and realized the weather was vastly different from other times of the year as soon as we stepped off the plane. I started to melt right there and then, and haven’t stopped since.
My condo is cute and is in a pretty decent location. It’s about a 20 min (flat) walk to the old town beach, and a 30 min walk (each way) to school. I haven’t exactly started school yet. I went this past Monday, only to discover they put me in a class with three others (all 20-something blondes from Switzerland) whose language skills were far more advanced than mine. (You know you’re the dummy in the class when you ask a question and the other students are the ones who answer.) There wasn’t another beginner’s class that week, so I now start this Monday instead.
The hubby spent most of his week here with Nacho trying to find and buy a vehicle. Wow – what an eye opener on how different things are done in Mexico! But he did get quite a bit accomplished – he bought us each a cell phone to use while we’re here, set up a bank account, and bought a good used Ford Explorer. (Yes, he bought another Ford – haha) Poor guy never actually got to use it as he flew home Thursday and Nacho and I picked it up yesterday.
I haven’t taken very many pictures yet, (the lens keeps fogging up) but here are a few if you’re interested.
Hope everyone in Gold River is well! I miss it already!

Tomorrow we head to Vancouver and then fly to Puerto Vallarta the following morning.
Our friend Nacho will be picking us up at the airport, we will quickly throw our things in the condo and then have a delicious feast courtesy of Nacho’s wife! September 16th is the 200th anniversary of Mexican independence from Spain, so I am guessing there will be a great big party on the Malecon!
I have an orientation at the Spanish Experience Center Friday afternoon, and then start school first thing Monday morning! Apparently it is complete immersion from the moment you walk through the door,(no speaka da english) so I’m hoping there will be a lot of pictures and charades!
I have been assured that my teeny tiny condo has internet, and I’m hoping this connection doesn’t depend on my ability to stand on my head in the far northeast corner of the living room and pray that the wireless connection comes in on the breeze!
Hopefully, this won’t be the case, as I’m planning for the Buzz to continue on as normal. To that end, please continue to contact me either through the contact form or by clicking the little email icon to your right.
¡Hasta luego!
She must have known I was talking about her late last night! Around 4:30 this afternoon my oldest yelled at me from the kitchen to grab my camera and come quick! Mama and two cubs had easily hopped the neighbours fence and were slowly meandering through their backyard.

I called the RCMP because of the time of day, and I could also hear people biking and walking along the road behind our house. It’s such a catch-22…. you want the bears to be able to go on their way safely, and for the little ones to have the chance to grow up. But if someone happened to surprise that Mama and be mauled, or worse…….
The RCMP came right away, but Mama had already changed direction and was right outside our fence. He managed to convince her it was time to move along (he asked very politely ), and then drove behind the house to the bridge to make sure she kept going on her way into the bush.
Here’s hoping she’ll decide to stay in the bush…

In anticipation of my trip to Puerto Vallarta in September, we phoned our friend Nacho (who lives in PV) last night. (If you’ve read the Buzz for awhile you’ll remember Nacho from this past Christmas.)
He’s very excited we’re coming, and of course wanted to know all our flight information so he can pick us up at the airport. (Nacho’s the best taxi driver – always stops for cold cerveza!)
He and the hubby got talking and Nacho asked about the cost of laptops here in Canada. (He says they are “too essspensive” in Mexico.) We told him probably about 6000 pesos for a cheap one (about $500 Canadian) and poor Nacho had himself a Mexican heart attack! (Keep in mind that the DAILY minimum wage in Mexico is almost $3 less than our HOURLY minimum wage.) He asked if we could instead try to find a “laptop usado” (used) for his teenage son Alexis. (Left to right in photo: Alexis, Jasmine, Wilver – Nacho’s children.)
So, if anyone happens to have a laptop (that isn’t completely ancient) with wireless capabilities and is in decent shape that they are willing to sell, please send me an email at infoATgoldriverbuzzDOTcom.
