Local teen hands Paralympic torch to Roberto Luongo

Carli Rose is one of the luckiest teenagers around, having been the one to pass the Paralympic flame to Roberto Luongo this past Thursday in Vancouver!

Carli was notified in early January that she was selected to be one of the torchbearers based on the essay she had submitted.  Many of her family members (her Mom Anita, sisters Taylor and Sydni, brother Logan, Grandma Sandie Rose, Aunt & Uncle Cheri and Will Graham, and Sandie’s sister Pat and her granddaughter Meadow) traveled to Vancouver with her last week to cheer her on and share in the excitement and celebrations.

Carli says that it was just ‘the luck of the draw’, that she ended up carrying the Paralympic torch right before Vancouver Canuck goaltender Roberto Luongo.

Carli is still floating on cloud nine but says:

“This was the most awesome experience of my life.  It was a once in a lifetime opportunity and one I will never forget.  I met many Paralympians who are very inspiring. Of course my biggest thrill was making a new best friend “Roberto Luongo”.  I was speechless when they told me I would be passing my flame to him.  He was very friendly and I had a blast hanging out with him before our run.”

Along with meeting Roberto Luongo, Carli met CTV News Anchor Mi Jung Lee, Premier Gordon Campbell and even Prime Minister Stephen Harper!

WOW!  The experience of a lifetime for sure! Congratulations on such a fantastic occasion Carli, and for making all of Gold River proud! :)

Carli also appears on the Vancouver Canucks Website in the gallery – scroll through to photo #11.

Gold River teens off to Mexico tomorrow!

Matthew Tarasoff, Erica Engh, Emily Beer and Alyshia Boyle will soon be joining 23 other Thrive members and leaders in the Baja Region of Mexico over Spring Break.   They will be spending their time painting buildings, cleaning, and doing odd jobs for Campo Christiano, where they will be staying.

Best of luck to the four of you, and your entire group – I hope you have the trip of a lifetime!! :-)

What's up for the weekend?

Friday Feb 19th

- Thrive teen night is Friday – there will be a jam session for all those interested in making some music from 3:30-5:00pm.  The group will head to the arena at 6:30pm to support the skate carnival at the ice rink, and at 8:30pm will head back to the Thrive Centre for a Thrive night! Get ready for some great games, great friends and a great discussion.

- Karaoke will be going at the Gold River Legion – usually running from around 8:30pm on.

- Of course no one will want to miss out on the Skating Carnival at 6:30pm tonight!  Bring some extra cash for a beautiful basket raffle, 50/50 tickets and to buy flowers for the skaters.

Saturday Feb 20th

- The Gold River Hawks Mites (5/6 yrs) will be playing their first home games this Saturday.  Game times are 10:00am and again at 1:00pm.  The little guys are absolutely adorable to watch, so don’t miss it!

- Speaking of adorable to watch…(cough, cough), the Gold River Grey Hawks will be taking on Powell River Saturday from 7:00-9:00pm and then again at 10:00am on Sunday.  The Arena Lounge will be open Saturday night as well.  The Powell River team always has a great time when they come to Gold River – perhaps TOO great a time!  A little birdie told me that the last time they were here one of the players got himself lost (because, hey – we all know how easy that is to do in Gold River!?), went looking for help and ended up sleeping on a bench in the Courtroom!  Guess he figured he’d just wait for the Judge!

That’s all I know about – anything I’m missing?  Have a great weekend everyone!

Local teenager to carry the Paralympic Torch

Gold River teen Carli Rose was chosen to be a torchbearer in the Paralympics in Robson square on March 11/12th, 2010.

Carli had entered a contest on the YouGottaBeHere.ca website, and sent in her essay outlining why she wanted to be a torchbearer and what it would mean to her.  She was notified by the Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Secretariat on January 11th that she had been selected and her name was forwarded to VANOC.  On Feb. 5th she received her official torchbearer invitation.  She will be participating in the 24 hour relay taking place in Robson Square March 11-12th.  She has not yet received the actual time of her run.

As her prize for being chosen, she will receive a Paralympic outfit which is a different colour blue, and also has the option to purchase the torch.

Congratulations Carli!  All of Gold River will be cheering you on!

What's up for the weekend?

~ It’s teen night tonight at the Thrive Centre!  Tonight the group will be heading to the pool from 7:00-9:00pm, and then returning to the Thrive Centre.  Lots of fun stuff as always.

~ Saturday and Sunday will be busy days at the arena, with various Gold River Hawks teams hosting many different games:

Saturday game times:

12:00-1:30pm – GR Novice (7/8 yrs) take on Campbell River

1:30-3:00pm – GR Midgets (15/16/17 yrs) take on Comox

3:00-4:30pm – GR Novice game #2 against Campbell River

4:30-6:00pm – GR Midgets game #2 against Comox

Sunday game times:

Update: ~All home games on Sunday have been canceled~

FYI:  The two Midget games on Saturday are the Midgets first (and perhaps last) home games of the season – most Midget games are out of town, so please don’t miss the chance to cheer on the oldest Hawks Division!

~ On Saturday Feb 13th you can dance the night away with DJ’s Sheila and Jason at the Gold River Legion.  Prizes, snacks and lots of fun provided!  NO COVER CHARGE!

~ Don’t forget the Valentine’s Day dinner/fundraiser at the Odika Cafe on Sunday Feb 14th at 6:30pm.  Tickets are required for this event, and are available from most members of Northgate Church, and many youth members as well.

That’s all I can think of going on this weekend.  What did I miss?

Youth Centre a great success

The new Thrive Youth Centre has seen a great couple of weekends so far with many local youth and teens hanging out, playing games and having a great time together.

One local resident caught me in the Super Valu the other day and during our conversation she suggested that the Youth Centre be renamed ‘The Vault’.  This nickname is definitely fitting given the recent incident involving a local teenager who found himself on the wrong side of the bank vault door, which is still located in the Youth Centre as that building was once the TD Bank.  Thankfully, as I’m sure you’ve all heard, after some tense moments for everyone involved, a previous TD Bank employee was contacted and the door was opened.

If you want to join in all the fun (but stay out of the vault!), Youth Centre hours until Spring Break are as follows:

Mondays 7-9 Men’s night & Father/son
Wednesdays 3:15-5 Grades 3-5
Wednesdays 6:30-8 Grades 6-12
Fridays 7pm Grades 8-12

Please call Sheila Bugar 283-2910 if you have any questions or if you are interested in supervising Youth Centre activities.
