Via Miriam Trevis

During the period July 14 – August 12, the Nootka Sound RCMP detachment responded to 87 calls for service.

July 14

A Campbell River driver found that driving his 2001 Ford F150 at 120 kph in an 80 kph zone on Highway 28 east of Gold River can only result in one thing – a violation ticket for excessive speed and impoundment of the truck for seven days.

July 15

A report was received that 3000 feet of yellow rope had been stolen from a residence in Tahsis. Anyone with information concerning this theft is asked to contact the RCMP.

July 16

A report of a disturbance at 450 Maquinna Crescent was received. Police attended and found that a heated argument had broken out between a mother and son as a result of the theft of some alcohol. The parties were separated by police and no further incidents were reported.

A 2008 Dodge Ram was clocked at 126 kph in an 80 kph zone, resulting in the Black Creek driver receiving a ticket for excessive speed and the loss of the vehicle for seven days.

July 19

The theft of approximately eight bottles of hard liquor was reported by the owners of the China House restaurant. Our investigation is ongoing.

July 20

The owner of a cabin at Queens Cove reported that it appeared that unauthorised persons had been using the cabin.

A noise complaint was received from the Gold Crest Apartments. Police attended and spoke to the resident at the unit in question and he agreed to keep the music down. The volume of the music had already been lowered prior to police attendance.

While dealing with the above issue, police observed a male staggering his way around the apartment buildings holding an open can of Old English beer in his hand. This party is well known to police and as a result of his high level of intoxication, and for his own safety, he was removed to the cells to sleep off his indulgences.

July 21

A report was received at 3 a.m. that a group of young intoxicated adults was causing a disturbance on the walkway between Muchalat Drive and Chamiss Crescent. Police attended and located two of the young adults who were carrying open alcohol and the matter was dealt with accordingly.

The theft of a six foot long copper strip was reported to have taken place at the CBC antenna at Marling Field. The copper has a value of $500 and our investigation is ongoing.

July 22

Two 11 year old shop lifters were apprehended at Super Valu. They were caught attempting to smuggle Monster Energy drinks from the store without paying. Their parents were contacted and the matter was left in their hands.

A disturbance was reported on Matchlee Drive. Police attended and spoke to the complainant who stated that a young male had attended at the residence and had kicked in the door. Evidently an ongoing dispute over a girl was the cause of the disturbance and the matter has been referred to the Restorative Justice Society.

July 24

The owner of a wallet was extremely grateful that the person who found it handed it in to the detachment with all the cash inside still intact. The owner stated that the honesty of the person handing in the wallet was extremely appreciated.

The Stupid Human Speeders ticket award this time goes to the Campbell River driver who was clocked at 160 kph in an 80 kph zone in his 2006 Ford F 350. As per the law, the driver received a ticket for excessive speed and lost the vehicle for seven days.

A report was received at 11.23 p.m. regarding some overdue hikers. Patrols were set up in the area of Elk River where the hikers were believed to be but, fortunately, at 1 a.m. a call was received to say that the couple had contacted the police to advise that they were safe and sound in Campbell River.

July 25

It must have been a long walk home for the Busby, Alberta driver who was clocked at 144 kph in an 80 kph zone. The 2010 Mazda 3 was impounded for seven days and the driver given a ticket for excessive speed.

July 26

A breach of the peace report was received from a residence at Tsaxana. Some invited guests had outstayed their welcome and were refusing to leave the residence when so requested by the owner. Upon police attendance, the very intoxicated unwanted guests were moved on and no further incidents were reported.

July 27

A dark red older bike was reported stolen from the Gold Crest Apartments when the owner failed to lock it up securely. The owner of this bike would really like to have it returned.

A call was received from the Gold Crest Apartments that a resident was extremely intoxicated and was throwing glass bottles around near Building 7. Police attended and removed the intoxicated male to the cells to sober up.

July 28

A mother called to report that her daughter’s bike, which had been in their own driveway, had been run over by a vehicle. The report was received for information purposes only.

A sudden death was reported from the Nootka Island Fishing Lodge. A 50-year old male succumbed to cardiac arrest.

July 29

A domestic dispute in progress was reported from Tahsis. Police attended and spoke with both parties with the complainant explaining that she and her fiance had got into a verbal argument. The complainant stated that it was her intention to return to Montreal to live. No assault had taken place and police are monitoring the situation.

July 31

A report was received of an erratic driver on Highway 28, heading towards Tsaxana. Police located the vehicle and the young female driver who does not have a drivers licence. She was ticketed accordingly.

August 6

A Chubb Safe was located in the parking lot near IR 12. The safe, which was empty, has been seized by police and our investigation into this incident is ongoing.

A single vehicle accident occurred on the Head Bay Road south of Tahsis when a driver lost control of the vehicle and hit the ditch, causing the vehicle to roll over. There were minor injuries incurrred but no charges laid.

August 7

It would be an even longer walk home for the Coeur d’Alene, Idaho driver who was clocked at 131 kph in an 80 kph zone. The 2008 Toyota Tundra was impounded for seven days and the driver issued an excessive speed ticket.

August 8

The loss of a wallet was reported to the detachment. Anyone finding it should please bring it into the detachment.

While on patrol near the Village Square Plaza, police observed an intoxicated male near the Liquor Store. The male was slurring his speech and did not appear to know where he was. He was removed to the cells to sober up. This is the same male that was involved in the incidents also involving alcohol on July 20th and July 27th.

August 10

A report was received of a suicidal male in Tahsis. Police attended and the male was first removed to the Tahsis Clinic and then moved to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Comox for further assessment.

August 11

A man attended the detachment to say that he had just observed a young native man riding a bicycle which he believed was the one of the bicycles stolen from his home approximately one month ago. Police located the male on the bike and it was confirmed that it was indeed the bicycle which belonged to the claimant. The bike rider was arrested for possession of stolen property and our investigation is ongoing.

The Nootka Sound RCMP detachment would like to welcome Constable Peter Koutougos to this area. Peter, his wife Angela and their two children have moved to Gold River from down Island.

During the period June 20 to July 13, the Nootka Sound RCMP detachment responded to 59 calls for service.

June 22

A report of a problem bear near the Muncipal Dock. This particular animal was chasing people away. Conservation authorities were notified and after traps had been set up, several bears were caught.

June 25

During a bar check at the Royal Canadian Legion, police observed an individual standing outside, smoking a joint. He was asked to please put the cigarette out and was warned that there would be more dire consequences if he continued to smoke this illegal substance.

An arguement and fight broke out during a heavy night of drinking and, as a result, police were called. Upon arrival, police were told that the combatants had settled down. To ensure no more problems occurred, police did remove some of the people from the residence but no charges were laid since it was determined that the fight was consensual.

June 26

A break and enter occurred at the Gold Crest Apartments when culprits broke into the owner/manager’s apartment and stole keys to several other apartments. The manager was later informed that he could have the keys back at the cost of $5 per key. Police attended and were able to apprehend the culprits. Charges are now being considered.

Over the weekend of June 25/26, police received several reports of stolen bicycles. Two bikes were found and turned into the detachment. The owner of one of the bikes has now been reunited but the other bike is still waiting to be claimed. If you have recently had a bike stolen, drop by the detachment and see if the description you give of your bike matches the one being held.

One aluminum quad ramp has been handed into the detachment. If you can describe the pattern and colour and the area where you feel you may have lost this piece of equipment, please contact the detachment.

June 28

Police attended at an apartment on Alder Crescent to serve a subpoena on a local male. When he answered the door, a strong smell of marijuana was evident. He was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and a large quanitity of marijuana, equipment and paraphenalia was seized. It was evident from the quantity of drugs that this individual was involved in the sale of the illegal substance. He has now been charged and the situation is being monitored.

June 28

The theft of some fishing tackle was reported. Two rods and a tackle box had been taken from a boat in a driveway on Alder Crescent. If you hear of anyone selling cheap fishing tackle, please notify the RCMP.

July 1

A report was received of an intoxicated driver travelling between Tsaxana and Gold River. The driver was located in Gold River and was given an immediate 90 day roadside suspension.

An assault report was received at 1 a.m. when a female riding a motorised scooter home from the ball field came upon a group of people horsing around on the bridge. An incident occurred and charges are now pending.

July 2

While on foot patrol at 1 a.m. at Marling Field, police detected a strong odour of marijuana coming from one particular camp site. Police observed a male smoking a joint and once he realised it was the police looking at him, he quickly extinguished it. Alongside the male was a tupperware container holding a small amount of marijuana and rolling papers. The individual was warned about his behaviour and the marijuana and rolling papers seized.

While conducting a road check at second bridge, police stopped a driver and noted a strong smell of marijuana. The driver was arrested for possession and a small amount of marijuana was seized. The individual was given a 24 hour driving suspension.

July 3

Police were called to a residence at Tsaxana where a family member was acting in a violent manner. Upon attendance, police were told that the individual had passed out and that no further trouble was anticipated.

July 7

While conducting laser enforcement on Highway 28, 25 kilometers east of Gold River, police observed a vehicle travelling at 115 kph in an 80 kph zone. Police followed the car to pull the driver over and it was evident that the driver was attempting to outrun the police since a police car coming in the opposite direction clocked the 1990 Honda Prelude at 137 kph. The Prince George resident lost the vehicle for seven days and received an ticket for excessive speed.

While fuelling up at the Payless station, a police officer was standing in line waiting to pay when he noticed a strong smell of stale liquor coming from the person standing ine line in front of him. The police officer recognised this individual from previous encounters so watched him as he left the store and then went to drive away in the vehicle. Police approached him and again were aware of the smell of stale liquor. The individual confirmed he had had “a few beers” and received a three day roadside suspension.

The police officer returned to his place in line to pay for his gas when he noticed another individual entering the store, carrying an open can of beer. This party was charged with drinking in a public place and was removed to the cells to sober up.

July 9

A report of a domestic dispute was received from a residence in Larch Place. Police arrested a female for breach of the peace and intoxication. During the course of the arrest, police learned that her common law spouse had assaulted her and so he was arrested the next morning and police are monitoring the situation.

While attending to the domestic dispute, police noticed the smell of marijuana and found a Mom and Pop style marijuana grow op which was dismantled.

July 10

An intoxicated male was causing problems again at Tsaxana. This is an ongoing problem with this individual who becomes aggressive towards family members after drinking alcohol. Police are working with Band to monitor this situation.

July 12

Some more fishing gear was reported stolen from a boat parked on Dogwood Drive. Several items were taken and are now recorded in the police computer system. Residents are again advised not to leave valuables in their boats or cars. These are crimes of opportunity and although we like to think we live in a safe community, crime stats prove otherwise for this type of theft.

July 13

A Campbell River resident found out that it was not a smart thing to do to drive at 126 kph in an 80 kph zone. The driver lost the 2010 White Dodge Ram for seven days and received a ticket for excessive speed.

Around the Sound will be published on The Buzz while The Record is on Summer break.

via Miriam Trevis:

During the 16 day period, June 7 – 23, the Nootka Sound RCMP detachment responded to 42 calls for service.

June 7

A motor vehicle accident was reported from the area of Big Bend when a deer ran into a vehicle. The damage to the vehicle was quite substantial, totalling $5000, and the deer did not fare well either.

June 9

While conducting laser enforcement on Highway 28, a 2004 Ford F350 was clocked at 134 kph in an 80 kph zone. The Royston based driver was given a ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Same day and location, a 2011 Ford Fiesta belonging to Budget Rent-a-Car was clocked at 146 kph and the Campbell River driver received the same punishment outlined above.

June 10

The Comox driver of a 2010 GMC Sierra learned to his cost that travelling at 139 kph while police are operating radar in the area, is not a good idea. Again the vehicle was impounded for seven days and the driver was given a ticket for excessive speed.

June 11

A complainant reported a fight on the road between A and B blocks at Tsaxana. Evidently a group had started to argue about the Stanley Cup finals and starting fighting amongst themselves. The complainant did call back to say that the fight had ended but police attended anyway. It was determined that the fight was consensual between these individuals and only minor injuries were incurred.

A resident at Tsaxana called to complain that her son was damaging property within the residence. Police attended and located the son who was intoxicated. While damage to the home was only minor, he was arrested for mischief and held in custody until he had sobered up.

June 12

A report was received of a bail violation. The caller stated that the individual concerned was under court order to abstain from alcohol. The person was located and was found to be severely intoxicated and, therefore, arrested. During the investigation it was learned that this individual had assaulted another person at a residence at Tsaxana and he is now facing charges of breach of an undertaking and assault.

June 13

While conducting laser enforcement on Highway 28, a 1998 Ford F150 was clocked at 130 kph in an 80 kph zone. The Courtenay based driver received a ticket for excessive speed and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.

June 15

A dispute between neighbours was mediated in Tahsis.

Police were called to a residence at Tsaxana where several intoxicated individuals were refusing to leave a party. The homeowner wanted to close the party down but no one wanted to go home. Due to another call requiring priority, police were delayed in attending at this residence and when they did get there found that the partygoers had all left.

While making patrols around midnight at Tsaxana on an unrelated incident, police observed a blue Hyundai Sonata parked at the side of the road with the engine idling. Upon speaking to the driver, the smell of alcohol was quite apparent and a roadside sample was taken which resulted in a “fail” reading. Impaired charges are being forwarded to Crown.

June 16

A call was received from a Dogwood Drive residence relevant to a domestic dispute. The female complainant told police that her common law husband had assaulted her. The male had left the residence so police conducted patrols and were successful in locating and arresting this individual. Our investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.

A 2 a.m. call from a home at Tsaxana indicated that a male at the residence was getting angry towards guests in the home. Police attended and determined that no assault had taken place and the homeowner agreed to shut the party down.

June 17

Another call from Tsaxana that an intoxicated male had passed out at a residence there. Police attended and with the assistance of the homeowner, managed to remove this person from the home.

June 18

A Saskatoon driver found out to his dismay, that travelling at 141 kph in his 2011 Nissan Altima is not considered to be too smart in this area. The same punishment awaited him as all the other speeders as he received a ticket and lost the vehicle for seven days impoundment.

June 19

The high flyer award this week goes to a motor cyclist from the Greater Victoria area who was operating his bike at 165 kph when stopped by police on Highway 28. That is more than twice the speed limit! It is hoped that the substantial fine and the loss of his bike for seven days will make him think twice before speeding again.

The final speeder of the week was the Nanaimo resident driving his 2009 Mazda 3 at 136 kph in an 80 kph zone. The usual punishment was meted out to this individual.

The victim had listed a laptop for sale on the very popular Craigslist website. A potential buyer responded to the ad, a deal was made and it was agreed that the sale transaction would be made via PayPal.

The victim then received what they now know was a fake email (almost identical to one that PayPal would send), notifying them that the money had been transferred to their PayPal account. Thinking that the buyer had transferred the money, the victim then packaged up the laptop and sent it away to the buyer’s address.
