We will be coming around door to door, but if you can remember- empties at the curb is easy peasy for everyone!

All hockey players and parents are to meet in the arena parking lot for maps @ 6:00pm.  A reminder to hockey parents – if you do not wish to participate in fundraising, you can opt out by paying $100 on the night of registration.  Otherwise, we expect to see you all there!

I called the RCMP because of the time of day, and I could also hear people biking and walking along the road behind our house.  It’s such a catch-22…. you want the bears to be able to go on their way safely, and for the little ones to have the chance to grow up.  But if someone happened to surprise that Mama and be mauled, or worse…….

The RCMP came right away, but Mama had already changed direction and was right outside our fence.  He managed to convince her it was time to move along (he asked very politely ), and then drove behind the house to the bridge to make sure she kept going on her way into the bush.

Here’s hoping she’ll decide to stay in the bush…

Wednesday, September 8th starting at 6:30pm at the Gold River Secondary School lobby area.

Things to bring:

• Your child – he/she needs to sign the player contract
• Your child’s Carecard number
• Cash or post dated cheques

Registration fees will be the same as last year – $150 for Mites and $275 for all other divisions.  You must pay in full at registration or leave postdated cheques.  A suggestion is as follows:

Sept 8 – $75

Oct 8 – $75

Nov 8 – $75

Dec 8 – $50

Also – there will be an equipment swap/sale/give-away on registration night.  There are ALWAYS people in need of equipment, so please take a look at any extra stuff you have hanging around and bring it down.  If you wish to sell hockey items you may, but all sales/collecting, etc., is your responsibility.

I have had inquiries from parents in Tahsis who wish to enroll  kids in hockey, but they are needing equipment!  Please help and bring any extra items that could be used by others.

Practice nights/times will stay the same as last year for now.  Players will most likely be on the ice the weekend of the 18th.

As is usual at this time of year, black bears are here in full force in Gold River it seems.

It is always concerning, however this year there is at least one female with cubs wandering through town.  Conservation officers have been in the Village and have been observing and speaking to various residents.  According to local RCMP, Conservation officers found that while most Gold River residents are very ‘bear aware’, we need to do better.

They discovered carports with unsecured deep freezes (bears can open these!), as well as full garbage cans in carports and at the side of houses.  In one recent incident a bear pried the doors of a metal shed open and pulled out the garbage cans inside.

Conservation officers have concluded that we have created our bear problem with the food sources we are leaving for them.

(There was garbage all over up there, but I wasn’t getting out of my car for a better picture!)

(Little Miss Ogden was all smiles even doing clean up duty!  Way to go! )

Conservation officers as well as local RCMP are making efforts to deal with these bears to preserve public safety, but in the meantime are advising the public to be extremely cautious when walking and to always be aware of your surroundings so as to not be surprised by a bear.  (or vice versa)

Nootka Sound Outdoor Program 2010-2011

Are you ready for wilderness fun and adventure for all comfort levels? The Nootka Sound Outdoor Program (NSOP) is gearing up to challenge and introduce students to exhilarating outdoor pursuits. The credit program is exclusively available to senior grade 10, 11, and 12 students who can earn up to 8 elective credits (2 courses) each year toward graduation! NSOP is fun, flexible, free, and is offered outside the regular school day on weekends, holidays, and after school. Sound too good to be true – read on!

• Sayward Lakes Canoe Route – 2 nights w/ portages and more.
• Trekking and Peak Bagging – The sky’s the limit!
• Wildcard Weekends – Dare to dabble – what adventure awaits you!

Orientation Sessions – Earn credit for these sessions!

Students must enroll in one of four exciting orientation sessions in September.

1. Sept. 11-12 (Strathona Park Lodge) register by Friday September 10

2. Sept. 18-19 (Hornby Island) register by Monday Sept 13

3. Sept. 25-26 (Esperanza) register by Monday Sept 20

4. Sept. 27-28 after school orientation (Gold River) register by Friday Sept 24.

Note: Students will be given an NSOP package on the first day of school complete with registration procedures, activity program, and meeting dates for parents, volunteers, teachers and students. Changes to schedule may occur depending availability and acts of nature..
