I have a question…what are they going to do with all the ash left over after the garbage is burned? Does the village have a plan, is it going to buried somewhere? Is it going to be used in paving?? Just curious.

  • John McPherson

The Covanta representative I spoke with peronally at an Open House last year informed me that they have secured a fly ash dump site on the mountain side directly behind the Emcon highways yard (on the mill road). The access road would be across from the old Hart Lake land fill. Apparently, with their proposed liner system and the minimal residue created by the high combustion wafers into which the burnable garbage is converted, any leaching into ground water would be between negligible and nil. The only “toxin” (if it can be called that) of any kind in this ash, I was informed, is salt, and this is from the high salt content in the food packaging which will be burnt to produce power.

John is correct on the location. The Village has a license of occupation on this property and had it rezoned from the Regional District last year. The dump site will be built in cells with no lechate and the ash could be used in the manufacturing of concrete blocks if so desired

Why are no more comments being received on the “Covanta/GIE” thread? I was finding the comments interesting and think the conversation should continue. I believe it’s healthy to read the various opinions of those of us who will be affected by this industry.

Not everyone will agree with Covanta coming (are they still coming??) into GR. But you know what, that’s ok. It’s healthy to have these discussions and perhaps people from both sides of this debate can learn something new they never considered before.

Just a question to all those “bullies” out there (on both sides) who would rather not have these engaging discussions, but have instead suggested those opposed to their views to simply leave town: What do you think this town would look like if those opposed to your views left town?

p.s. I remain neutral on this issue, and just wanted to express my thoughts – nothing more.

Thanks Craig and John that clears that up for me. I have been reading about various plants like the one proposed, and they all have the same thing in common….ash. Nice to know that concrete blocks are something that has been discussed. The one in Brampton uses 30% of thier ash in paving projects, is that something you have also considered? The less buried, and the more reused, the better, after all it is all about being green right?!

  • John McPherson

I tend to agree, Vic – and I’m sure Covanta would agree too. Healthy dialogue is important, with opinions being expressed freely from both sides. I would prefer, however, that expressed opinions be those formed as a result of actual research and careful consideration of data/facts, rather than baseless rants. There seems to be a religious element to much of the environmentalist rhetoric confronting us in the media and at street level these days. We need well-formed views that are the product of strong critical thinking to guide our involvement with industry and the political bureaucracies governing us.

And yes, smalltowngirl – the more the ash byproduct can be profitably recycled, the better for everyone.

wow thats quite a statement john considering the”religious environmentalist rhetoric”….yikes

GR Girl, not meaning a personal attack. Just commenting on the title, thought it was the new alchemists. Who gets the garbage, and who is getting the gold?

  • GR Girl

    Thanks pb :)

Good luck to the town! We hope you get the rights. Have been reading up on the burning garbage issues and since I live with an Environmental Manager type guy (haha) I have been finding out there are very few bad affects. Now that people are seeing the energy and money to be made, they all seem interested. I hope Gold River wins in the end since it would be a positive for the town and people who live there. Who knows might be enough to get that environmental guy interested in coming back. :)
