Live Greener with Soap Nuts

For those of you who visited the Flea Market at GRSS last Saturday you were probably introduced to these strange little nuts.  Or maybe you saw them featured on CBC’s Dragon’s Den?

Soap Nuts Trial Size - $1.50

Soap nuts are small berry like fruits that grow in warm, tropical and sultry climates.  They are native to India, Nepal and some other South Asian countries and consist of a small yellowish Brown fruit covered by a hard outer covering.  The main ingredient in soap nuts is saponins which make them an excellent cleaning utility that can be used to clean almost everything ranging from clothes to dishes and regular household cleaning!

Greener Living Organic Soap Nuts - 500g (1.1lbs) - $22.00

To use them, place 4 Soap Nuts in the small muslin bag, tie it closed, and throw it into the drum of your washing machine along with your articles of clothing that need washing. You can reuse a batch for 4 or 5 loads of laundry. The soap nuts will be mushy and grey when they need to be composted for your garden.

I bought some at the Flea Market, gathered up a bunch of stinky towels from the floor of bedrooms (!), threw the trial size bag in the wash along with, and they came out smelling fantastic!

I also bought a couple Coconut Coir Fiber Scrubs and am loving those as well!

Coconut Coir Fiber Scrub - Set of 2: $6.00

Each scrub pad is made up of coconut coir fiber bound together by a non-toxic adhesive, and is completely biodegradable. Will not scratch dishes or utensils.  No more nasty smelling dish rags or sponges!

For more information on any of these products, please see the Buy Soap Nuts company website.  In addition, our very own Laura Brunning is a retailer of these green products – you can contact her at 283-7980 or  giggles@cablerocket.com.
