You may recall that I posted about the Nootka Sound Outdoor Program back in June of this year.

Mr. Parkes is back from summer holidays and getting ready to hit it full force on the first weekend back to school!  Here is a bit more info for you on this new and very exciting program:

Nootka Sound Outdoor Program 2010-2011

Are you ready for wilderness fun and adventure for all comfort levels? The Nootka Sound Outdoor Program (NSOP) is gearing up to challenge and introduce students to exhilarating outdoor pursuits. The credit program is exclusively available to senior grade 10, 11, and 12 students who can earn up to 8 elective credits (2 courses) each year toward graduation! NSOP is fun, flexible, free, and is offered outside the regular school day on weekends, holidays, and after school. Sound too good to be true – read on!

A Few Highlights

  • RCMP Boot Camp – Are you tough enough?
  • Sayward Lakes Canoe Route – 2 nights w/ portages and more.
  • Trekking and Peak Bagging – The sky’s the limit!
  • Wildcard Weekends – Dare to dabblewhat adventure awaits you!
  • Winter Fun – Skiing, snowshoeing, winter camping, chalet weekends, avalanche awareness course
  • Logo Competition – Students vote for your favorite logo. Outdoor gear prize for winning artist
  • Girls only retreat and a boys only adventure. Students to plan!
  • More adventures to come – Stay tuned!

Orientation Sessions – Earn credit for these sessions!

Students must enroll in one of four exciting orientation sessions in September.

1. Sept. 11-12 (Strathona Park Lodge) register by Friday September 10

2. Sept. 18-19 (Hornby Island) register by Monday Sept 13

3. Sept. 25-26 (Esperanza) register by Monday Sept 20

4. Sept. 27-28 after school orientation (Gold River) register by Friday Sept 24.

Note: Students will be given an NSOP package on the first day of school complete with registration procedures, activity program, and meeting dates for parents, volunteers, teachers and students. Changes to schedule may occur depending availability and acts of nature..


NSOP is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in supporting our program and interested in adventure – please contact Philip Parkes at pparkes@viw.sd84.bc.ca, or 250-283-2538. A volunteer orientation evening is required along with a criminal record check.
