Craig Anderson Running for Re-Election as Mayor

My name is Craig Anderson and I am running for re-election for Mayor of Gold River. I have lived in this community for 32 years and as a single Dad, chose to raise my three kids here. My kids have graduated, moved on and I’m so proud of the adults they have become. I since have remarried and now have two step children. My goal as Mayor has been for a sustainable and livable community. Sustainable, so that our taxes can pay for our village services that we all use on a daily basis like our chlorine free clean water. Livable in that I have had many residents, young and old, tell me how important our recreation facilities are to their good health.

Everyone that has the good fortune to live in our Village is proud to say what we offer for a population base of our size. But how does it keep going fiscally with our tax base? Prudent spending and most of all carefully thought out decisions. I have been Mayor for the last 6 years and I am proud to say that we have maintained and improved all of our facilities. We have a new arena ice plant to make sure our kids can continue to enjoy hockey and figure skating on home ice. We are currently renewing the curling rink ice plant and in the spring we are revamping the community centre lobby to allow expanded access for mobility challenged residents.

In the past 6 years we’ve rebuilt all our Village’s water wells to allow more capacity, and installed auxiliary power to allow us to move water throughout the community should a power outage occur. Our sewage lift stations have also been rebuilt and have auxiliary power as well, should a power outage occur we will still be able to move the sewage without any chance of it overflowing into the Gold River. Our Village is 45 years old and these repairs were made with proactive, responsible decisions. I will not sacrifice our environment under any circumstances.

All these projects were made achievable through government grant funding. During the past 6 years our village has received 1.3 million dollars in grants from various levels of government. To access this money the Village had to spend $600,000 of our money. Not a bad deal, eh? Thanks to our wise investments our village has a bank account that any other village our size or larger envies. It is mandatory that we continue to be fiscally responsible to ensure the village services are sustainable.

In the last year two businesses have re-opened with new ownership and three key businesses have changed ownership in Gold River. I am eager to work with the new Chamber of Commerce to see how we can bring more businesses to our town together.

Our lifeblood has always been the working forest. We can finally say the forest industry has been revitalized. With this new forestry economy young families have started to move back to town!

I have been working hard representing our Village at numerous meetings at the request of Covanta and Green Island Energy to help get their power project through the bureaucratic maze of government permits. The ball is now back in Metro Vancouver’s court but with the municipal election happening we will not hear anything until at least January.

If you have any questions, please contact me on the Gold River Buzz at “Ask the Mayor” or my email grcanderson@cablerocket.com or my home phone #250-283-7100 or I will be at the Clayworks Café for coffee and questions with the Mayor on November 17, 2011 from 10am to noon.

Letter to Politicians/Voters in the GVRD Regarding Gold River Power Project

The following is a letter written and forwarded to fifteen papers in the Lower Mainland with the intent to get the attention of some of the Politicians seeking election/re-election.

Letter to the Editor,

In July 2011 the Honorable Terry Lake, Minister of Environment gave permission to the GVRD to use Waste to Energy technology to deal with its ever mounting garbage problem.  With Cache Creek landfill closing 2016 time is of the essence and this is the election for politicians and voters to make garbage an election issue.

The Fraser Valley communities have made it clear they will not tolerate/permit any further erosion of their air shed and the Greater Vancouver politicians seem hesitant to take a stand on how they want to deal with their garbage moving forward.  The technology currently on the table is Waste to Energy, but the debate is, should it be an in-region solution or an out-of-region solution.

A small village on Vancouver Island is in a dramatic economic decline.  This is the GVRD’s opportunity to be a knight in shining armor.  The Gold River Power project, a state of the art Waste to Energy facility has the ability to completely change our circumstance.  We need the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) created from processed waste to make the Gold River Power Project a reality and help our Village become stable and grow into the future.  The construction phase would boost our village economy in the short term, and the resulting permanent jobs would enable us to grow and stabilize into the future.  Think about it, one hundred permanent jobs to a struggling community of 1300 would be the beginning of a new foundation for Gold River.

A pay it forward answer with urban community giving a helping hand to a small rural village.  The communities of the Greater Vancouver Regional District would be helping Gold River while Gold River would be helping deal with a huge garbage can sitting on the doorstep of the GVRD.

The hard work is all done, the permits and licenses and First Nations approvals are all in place.  On this issue our community is unified.

So to you campaigning politicians, make GVRD’s garbage part of your platform and make Gold River your solution.  To you voters in the lower mainland ask the garbage question of your local candidates, find out where they stand and let them know what the correct answer is.

Food Bank Blitz – Dec 4

Once again Santa’s Elves will be doing a Blitz of the Village, in aid of the Gold River Food Bank.

This blitz will take place on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

This is such an important drive for the foodbank as they prepare the Christmas hampers for those less fortunate in our community.

Please give generously when the Elves come to your door!

Letter Regarding BC Hydro Smart Meters

Via Julie Schimunek:

This is just one of the many articles that I have researched on the smart meters that are doomed to come here by Aug 2012.

http://emfsafetynetwork.org/?page_id=1280

If we do not take a stand against these things, we will only have ourselves to blame.  I for one am not going to let them put one on my house.  I would urge all concerned residents to check out on you tube a video called “The Dark Side of Smart Meters” and to read to article above.

At the moment there is a huge move for a total recall of these devices going on in BC.  A petition similiar to the HST one will be circulated, but we need to be a bit stronger about this.  Note in the article that the power company will not take responsibility for the fires caused when these things are installed.  Likewise, if one gets installed and your fridge packs it in instantly-too bad for you.

Let’s get on this Gold River.  There is a plan to have an informative meeting in January with BC Hydro for the whole town.  Let’s do our homework.  I am buying a High Frequency 35C meter so that I can go and test existing Smart Meters that are already in place on the Island.  BC Hydro says they only emit power a minute a day to report back to Hydro about consumption.  That is absolutely false information.  You can watch people on You Tube with these frequency testers and they show how high the spikes are.  There is a ton of evidence online on YouTube and in articles posted by the Wireless Radiation Safety Council and the EM Radiation Health Alliance.  Check it out and let’s be ready with the evidence.

You can actively voice your disapproval and take steps to protect yourself. www.citizensforsafetechnology.org has a great site with a Smart Meter Kit.  On there you will find posters to place by your existing analogue meter saying Corix and BC Hydro do not have your permission to put that device on your home. There is a letter for people to copy and paste into their own emails to send off to the Government and members of Parliament.  Also recommended is to mail a hard copy to BC Hydro and place a copy of it in the plastic ziploc holding your poster next to your meter. Until Smart Meters stop causing fires and the radiation levels go down to safe levels (if there is a safe level), I personally (and with many others in Gold River), will be fighting to stop these things from coming.

Best regards, Julie Schimunek
