Gold River Hawks go Green

As I’ve mentioned before, the Gold River Minor Hockey Association is always looking for ways to raise money in order to keep registration fees affordable for all Gold River parents.

GRMHA is now selling these reusable grocery bags with the Hawks logo:

You can show your support for Gold River hockey and help to do your part for the environment at the same time!

Bags are $5 each and any GRMHA member can hook you up with one!

Local 1988 Olympic Moments

It appears that Gold River residents have had the opportunity to carry the Olympic torch in not only the 2010 Winter Olympics as Roz Latvala did, but also the 1988 Olympics.

Cheri Graham found two great articles from The Record as she was going through old files, and thought we’d all enjoy taking a look.  (Click on the photo to open in a new window, and then click again to enlarge.)

Thanks so much Cheri – I’m sure many residents will remember this and enjoy the walk down memory lane! :-)

Resident Spotlight - Marion Last

This week’s resident spotlight is a lady who always has a smile on her face and a friendly word for everyone.  She has a fantastic sense of humour and never fails to make me laugh.  Marion Last (better known as Mare) is a wonderful friend, partner, Mother and Grandmother!  I hope you enjoy her spotlight.

How long have you lived in Gold River?

I have lived in Gold River for 25 years.

What brought you here?

I was looking for a quiet, safe place to bring up my children and I had family here so here we are..

What do you do for (paid) work?

I am a Holistic Health Practitioner

Please tell us about any volunteer work you do.

I always volunteer for Health Fairs to allow people to get to know more about holistic health.

Please tell us a bit about your family.

My partner, Alex, is self employed.   He owns and runs AJG Construction. I have 2 children, Adrian 29 and Miranda 27. They both have given me 2 beautiful grandchildren each, Riley, Van, Kodi and Teegan.

Do you have any pets?

I have no pets but you will see me walking my Daughter’s English Mastiff every day.  I love him but am allergic to animals so that is as close as I will get.

What do you like to do for fun?

Well I am pretty engrossed in my work right now – always learning, but when I am not doing that I usually am singing and playing music with Alex.  I love that.

What do you wish Gold River had that is doesn’t?

Well I would like Gold River to have more support groups for people suffering from mild depression and an energy plant..ha ha..

Is there anything missing for you?

Money…I am missing money. If you have any extra laying around I would gladly take it from you. :-)

And just for fun – if you were invisible, where would you go/what would you do?

If I were invisible I would sneak on board a plane to Mexico. What would I do?  Have the time of my life of course!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I will be going to work down in Oyster River at the Ocean Resort in mid February. I will be starting up a new Healing Arts Centre on the property that used to be Gourmet By The Sea.   I am looking forward to this new endeavor and hope some of my clients will be able to come see me there as well.  I will also be working here in Gold River a couple days a week.

I would like to thank the people of Gold River for making it a safe and pleasant place to bring up my children and for giving me the chance to start my business here.  Gold River is definitely a wonderful place to be.  I  will always be grateful.

Thank you GR Girl for this opportunity.  You are an asset to Gold River.

Thanks for being my Resident Spotlight this week Mare.  Good luck on your new adventures in Oyster River!

This & That Thursday

I know, I know.  It’s Friday.  Such is life.

- I started a new job this week which has been a big adjustment for this late night lovin’ girl!  Last night I was in bed before the kids – they looked worried about me.  Even though they’re teenagers now, they’re still creatures of habit and routine and me hitting the hay at 9:30pm threw them for a loop.

- Speaking of a change in routine – I think our poor Mattie (that’s him on the left) is having the most trouble with all of this.  By the greeting I got last night after work you’d think I’d been away for a month!

- I’m starting to get pretty excited for the start of the 2010 Olympics next week.  An old boyfriend of my cousin’s, Rob Fagan from Cranbrook, BC, is on the Canadian Olympic Snowboarding team.  It makes things a lot more exciting when you can not only root for your country, but for someone you know as well!  This is Rob – he’s on the side of The Bay (I believe) in Vancouver:

- I didn’t pay attention to what the groundhog said the other day – Spring?  More Winter?  I think I’ll go with Spring – everyone is talking about their crocuses and daffodils starting to come up already!   I’m pretty sure Mattie didn’t dig up all my bulbs last year, so I just might have some flowers again this Spring!  Here’s hoping.

Hwy 28 closed

Nootka Sound RCMP are advising the temporary closure of Highway 28 due to an accident at approximately 2:30pm today.

A logging truck dumped it’s load of logs just east of the Strathcona Park Lodge.  Officials are estimating the road to be closed for three to six hours.

Update:  As of about three hours ago the Highway is open to one lane traffic.  The Drive BC website updated at 8:26pm saying that the road has now been cleared.

FYI – here are some pics of the incident taken by Craig Anderson:
