Greyhawks season roundup

Hockey season for the Gold River Greyhawks wrapped up this past weekend in Campbell River.  (Look for them on the golf course now!)

The April 10/11 weekend saw our old boys in Campbell River playing in the Paint Your Wagon tournament – the old Pioneer League, for those that remember.  The guys did very well, playing four games and losing only one.  They ended up winning in the finals against the Campbell River Nighthawks and won their division!  (They have the t-shirts to prove it!)

This past weekend they were in Campbell River again, this time playing in the Emergency Services Tournament.  Things did not go quite as well for our old boys in this one.  They played their first game Friday night against DFO, (a hard battle they tell me) and they lost 5-2.

There was a bit of a kerfuffle during this game as you can see, but I believe the culprit was Wayne Guss and not Jim Murphy.  (Although it looks like Jim is giving someone hell!)  Whoever the culprit was, the guy on the other team certainly doesn’t look happy!

Their second game Saturday afternoon was against the 19 Wing Fliers (CFB Comox), and our boys were up 2-0 to begin with, but the game ended with Comox winning 5-4.  The Saturday evening game against the Comox Valley RCMP was a different story!  The Greyhawks dominated right from the beginning of the game, winning 9-1.

Now I don’t have individual pictures of every member of the team, but my husband did bring back a few for you all to enjoy:

Paul Kutz

Wayne Guss

Chris Matthews

Darryl Watt

(If I got any names wrong, please let me know!)

Congratulations on a great season you old farts!  It was a joy keeping track of the team this year, and poking some fun at the same time!  See you next season – same time, same place! :)

Gold River Minor Hockey Association news

Yes, hockey is over for the season, but there are still a couple of events coming up for GRMHA.  One to end the 2009/10 season, and one to start the 2010/11 season!

First up is the end of the year hockey awards – click the graphic below for more information:

Next is a notice for the upcoming Annual General Meeting – as usual, you have the chance to win free registration for the 2010/11 season, but you have to be at the meeting!

The Murphy’s have won two years in a row – last year Carmel’s name was drawn and the year before Jim’s was drawn.  Come to the meeting and get your name in – if the Murphy’s win again the rest of us can’t be held responsible for our actions!!  :)

Diana Pimlott's Moroccan Salad

Diana was actually one of the first people we met when we first moved here in 2003.  She worked at the liquor store then.  But we met her out at Muchalaht Lake – honest!! :)

Anyway, Muchalaht Lake was where I was introduced to Diana’s Moroccan salad during a camping potluck dinner  – and it was delicious!  I talked her into sending me the recipe so I could share it here.  Enjoy!

Moroccan Salad

Step 1

1 Tbsp. Soy sauce
1 Tbsp. Molasses
1/3 c. Wild rice
- Dissolve soy and molasses in 1 1/3 c. water and cook wild rice until tender.

Step 2

2 Tbsp. Oil
1/2 c. Brown rice
- Saute rice in oil then cook in 1 c. water (approx. 30 min. until tender)

Step 3

1 can garbanzo beans drained and rinsed
1/2 red onion -chopped
1 small red pepper -chopped
1/3 c. dried apricots -sliced
1/2 c. golden raisins
2 Tbsp. fresh mint or cilantro -chopped
1/2 c. slivered almonds -toasted
- Mix altogether with the cooked rices

Step 4 (the dressing)

1 tsp. Curry
1 tsp. Coriander
1 tsp. Turmeric
1 tsp. Nutmeg

As always .. best made the day before.

Resident Spotlight - Michelle Lightle

I met Michelle not long after we moved back to Gold River in the Fall of 2007.  I was having a coffee with friends at what use to be the ice cream parlour, and she was trying to sell me a pair of shoes!  She had purchased them off eBay and they ended up being too big.  (haha – sorry Michelle, that’s my first memory of you!)

Michelle is truly a fabulous person to know – she always has a great big smile on her face, and kind words for everyone she meets.  She is a great asset to our little community!

How long have you lived in Gold River? What brought you here?

I’ve lived in Gold River since January 20th, 2006.  I moved here from Coeur d’ Alene Idaho, to begin my life with my husband David and our 5 month old son Preston.  And being a big city girl, it was definitely culture shock……but I really enjoy the village life now, it is a fabulous place to raise small kids.

2. What do you do for (paid) work?

I am a mother of 2 kids and 2 dogs, so that is my fulfilling job.  It doesn’t pay much, but the payment is watching my kids grow and flourish.  I do however, (when I have some free time), LOVE to make jewelry…..it is relaxing and I enjoy challenging my creative side.  Before moving here, I owned my own business, including many other jobs over the years.  I do have my pilot’s license, so would LOVE to do some flying again!

Please tell us about any volunteer work you do.

At the moment, I am not volunteering anywhere. When I first moved here, I helped organize a “MOM’S” and a “Wednesday’s Out for Women” group at the Christian Fellowship Church, which I would do again in a minute. If there was a veterinary clinic, a humane society or an SPCA close by, you would definitely see me there.

Please tell us a bit about your family.

My life revolves around my family!  I am truly BLESSED!!  I have a great family here in Gold River as well as my wonderful family back in the states……who I miss terribly.  I am the extremely proud mother of two of the most beautiful kids in the world! (I am allowed to brag, right?)  A 4 ½ year old son named Preston, and a 22 month old daughter named Irelynd…….they are my life!  Preston starts kindergarten this fall, and he can hardly wait!  He loves all sports and really enjoys working in the yard with his dad. (He can pound in a nail better than most grown men.)  We are starting him early with an excellent work ethic!  Irelynd is almost two, going on 12.  She has quite a personality at such a young age, and we can’t keep her out of anything…..you name it, she gets into it.  She LOVES shoes already and has a closet any princess would die for!  (Can you say…spoiled rotten?!?)

Do you have any pets?

We have two dogs right now, but if it was up to me, we would have a zoo.  I am passionate about animals, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed on getting a few more.  We have a 5 year old Cocker Spaniel named Bentley, and a 4 year old English Mastiff named Lexus (Lexie).  As far as I know, they haven’t realized yet that they are dogs.  They definitely live in the lap of luxury, and they too are spoiled rotten!

What do you like to do for fun?

For fun, when there is time, I like to make jewelry, scrapbook, and spend time with my friends.  I love to go boating (especially when Luna was around), and go on walks with my family.  We enjoy traveling, and usually take a few trips to the states every year.  Our biggest form of entertainment typically, is watching our goofy kids and dogs; they sure know how to put on a show!

What do you wish Gold River had that it doesn’t? Is there anything missing for you?

Oh boy, I’m not really sure where to start.  Don’t get me wrong, I do love Gold River, I’m just missing a few things……Subway…..a Mexican & Italian restaurant……Krispy Kreme…….and of course a shopping mall.  I also wish that there was a Veterinary clinic in town; you never know when an emergency could arise.  It would be nice to have some more sporting activities for kids…….baseball, football and basketball, not to mention gymnastics and dance for the girls.

And just for fun – if you were invisible, where would you go / what would you do?

I think if I were invisible, I’d hop on a plane (first class of course), and travel ALL OVER THE WORLD!

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I just want to say thank you to the community of Gold River, for being so welcoming, generous, loving and supportive.  I feel so blessed to have found such a great community to raise my family and for the fabulous friends I’ve made!

Thanks Michelle for taking the time and being such a great Spotlight!

RWES Arts Fringe Festival

Ray Watkins Elementary School has been planning a community/school arts festival during BC Arts and Culture Week.

They have 16 or so guest mentors from the community volunteering to come in and work with groups of kids every afternoon for the week and then will be having a community celebration/fringe festival at the elementary school for the kids to show off all of their hard work!

There will be music and dance performances, and the entire school will be a gallery along with a lovely cafe.  There will be face painting too – and it is amazing face painting!  Admission is free, but they will be charging for goodies, and face painting is by donation.  There will also be a BBQ from 5:30-6:30 at the school.

Come on out – it will be amazing!
