Cub Leader Desperately Needed

via Maxine McLean

I have recently been approached by an adult who is willing to be a Cub leader, however, two leaders are needed to run a section.  In the past there have been kids interested who I had to disappoint as there was no one willing to volunteer as leaders.

Currently only one more adult is needed and we could make this great group happen again for kids here in Gold River.

If you are interested, please contact Maxine at scoutcentral@cablerocket.com

Gold Riverites Help Save Humanity

In the video game world that is!

Local residents Lee Yateman and Paul Laviolette traveled to Vancouver this past weekend for a Gears of War 3 event – the third game in the wildly popular Xbox 360 trilogy.

Lee carved two sculptures for the event – one of which was raffled off to a lucky winner in Vancouver, and the other will travel to Toronto for the game’s pre-launch there on Sept 18th.

Great work Lee!

6.4 Earthquake off Nootka Island

Photo via Global News

Did you feel it?  We sure did while sitting on the patio at the Gold River Golf Course!  At first we wondered what on earth they were doing at the logging division, but quickly realized what we were feeling had nothing to do with logging trucks.

Resident Brian Pitt was working under a vehicle on the dock at the Uchuck, and reported feeling the shaking and seeing oxy/acetylene bottles and holders swaying.  He then walked out of the building and described seeing a wall of water 8 – 10 feet high rise up from a calm sea approximately 300 feet from the shore.  Brian said it looked just like a mini-tsunami.  Brian also stated that there is no major damage at the docks to report yet, and that they all immediately evacuated the area.

Employees at the Shake Mill and log sort also immediately left for higher ground as soon as the shaking stopped, however employees at Grieg Seafood were not advised by management to evacuate.  Management at Grieg Seafood told the Buzz that they had all employees leave the building until the shaking stopped, and then return to continue working.

Following the devastating tsunamis in Thailand and more recently Japan, I would assume getting to higher ground immediately following a coastal earthquake is a no-brainer.

Many news and earthquake websites are reporting dozens of aftershocks, saying that we could expect to feel more (as much as magnitude 5.0) in the coming days.

A very good reminder for all of us to have our emergency kits stocked and ready.  Please refer to Get Prepared for more information.

Resident Spotlight – Donna Schneider

This week’s spotlight is someone who is a very caring person and someone who we all count on to help us when there’s a emergency.

Thank so much for taking part Donna – was great getting to know you better! :)

How long have you lived in Gold River? What brought you here?

I moved to GR in 1978 with my first husband. We came here for work and planned on staying 2 years! It was quite an adjustment coming from a city: no street lights or restaurants, no sidewalks or theaters. The highlight of my day was walking to check the mail! Once I got into the workforce and made friends, it became a great place to live.

What do you do for (paid) work?

I have held several jobs. My 1st job in Gold River was as a cook at Charlie’s Take-out which is where Clayworks is now. It was a log cabin type building. My favourite jobs I must say, have been working on the Uchuck  and currently as the Paramedic Unit Chief for the BC Ambulance service.

Please tell us about any volunteer work you do.

I am heavily involved with Emergency Preparedness. We do live in a very vulnerable area for interface fires, road closures(slides) and earthquakes. I don’t want to scare anyone, but a good reality check occurred only two summers ago with a fire, and this year with a tsunami warning from Japan. Everyone should be self sufficient for MORE than 72 hours.

Please tell us a bit about your family.

We have one daughter, Kyla. She grew up in Gold River and moved to Calgary to attend Mount Royal College University on a hockey scholarship. She has since married and we have a beautiful granddaughter named Sophia.

Do you have any pets?

We have always been dog people, but we have switched to cats. We own two black and white spayed females, “Smudge & Maggie” whom we adopted from the SPCA.

What do you like to do for fun?

I love to try golfing! I can’t really say “I golf” because it is a long drawn out process for me to get that little white ball from the tee to the hole. But I thoroughly enjoy it! I also curl in the winter and scrapbook.

What do you wish Gold River had that it doesn’t? Is there anything missing for you?

I wish Gold River had a bank – that’s what is missing for me. We could use a movie theatre, bowling alley and a skate park for the kids.

And just for fun – if you had 1 million dollars to donate to the community in any way you wished – what would you do with the money?

Gosh, I’d have to say, the money would go to Minor Hockey and the food bank.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Brian & I cannot think of anywhere else we’d rather live. This is such a beautiful town and we have the best neighbors going!
