Home From the World Police & Fire Games

Two wins, two losses – not too bad for a rag tag group of Mounties who had never played together before arriving in New York/New Jersey for the 2011 World Police & Fire Games.

As you can imagine, Hurricane Irene put a big wrench in organizer’s plans – first with all Mass Transit in both NY and NJ shutting down at noon on Saturday, and then floods and numerous power outages following the storm.

The RCMP Buffalo team was made up of Mounties from BC to Quebec, and I think they did better than even they expected given the circumstances.  They lost their first game 6-1 against the Quebec Provincial Police, won their second 4-1 against US Homeland Security and then won the third game 5-4 against Toronto Fire.  This put them into the quarter finals against New Haven Combo (Police and Fire – The New Haven Guns and Hoses…. get it? He he!), where they lost 5-2.

Besides hockey and Irene, we did mange to get a bit of free time for some sightseeing, going into Manhattan a few times, and down to Hoboken NJ (home of The Cake Boss).  The cannoli’s really ARE delicious!  Although I was naively disappointed that no one from the show was actually working there.

All in all, a great trip.  I didn’t manage to get to the Museum of Natural  History, which I regret, as I was really hoping to see the Whaler’s Shrine from Yuquot.  So nice to be home however, where it is relaxing and quiet. :)
