Candidates for School Trustee – Videos

The All Candidate’s Forum last night was (I thought anyway) extremely well attended.  If you were unable to make it, I managed to record almost all of the meeting and question period – sadly my camera battery died three quarters of  the way through the candidates closing statements.

I’ll be posting the videos in multiple parts in the coming days.  Here are the opening statements of the Candidates for School Trustee.  (Note:  Laverne Kelly was unable to attend.)

Housing Needed – Nov 11-13

A group of Whitewater kayakers are looking for a house to rent on the weekend of the 11/12/13 of November.

We don’t want to freeze outdoors at this time of year at night, and would like a warm place for our stuff to dry out.  We are very responsible and clean up after ourselves completely.  There are 5-6 of us, and we would like to stay Friday and Saturday night.

Please call Shayne at 250-797-0365, or post a reply here if this could be of interest to you.

Carol Donaldson – Incumbent for School Trustee

Students come first!

As your incumbent for the last two terms, I will continue to advocate for all of our students.

In this ever changing world, we need to give our students the skills and knowledge to be productive, happy, and responsible citizens for the future and now in our communities.  Realizing children’s potential means more than bringing home a good report card.  Now, more than ever, we need to develop their confidence to think about others with compassion, to make positive choices that enrich their lives, and to take responsibility for their actions and education.

Your existing Board of Education supports in class and out of classroom opportunities that develop students’ interests and passions.  To mention two of a list of many great programs, I am a strong supporter of our Nootka Sound Outdoor Program and Nootka Discovery School.  I also feel that the numerous field trips, performing arts, and guest speakers only add to enlighten students to all the endless possibilities the world has to offer.

We need to listen to our youths’ concerns and ideas in venues where they are comfortable.  We have to make the connection with our community’s children at such places as the hockey rink, churches, or parks to strengthen their abilities to feel loved and supported.

I will continue to build on healthy relationships with Parents, Staff and the Community.  Our strong teachers and caring community are positive strengths for our students.  I feel that the citizens of this School District are important role models, whose values and knowledge are underutilized and should be used to benefit the students.  I believe respectful, transparent, and collaborative relationships support the needs of our students.

Your Board of Education has significant decisions to ensure individualized student success is attainable, and I believe that working collaboratively and respectfully with all education partnerships can make those successes a reality.

I remain committed to working hard for our students in School District #84 and I respectfully ask for your support in the opportunity to continue to serve you as your Board of Education’s School Trustee in Gold River.

Sheila Bugar – Candidate for School Trustee

My name is Sheila Bugar.  My husband and I moved from Tahsis to Gold River almost exactly 10 years ago.  We have three children in the school system.  One in Ray Watkins Elementary and two in Gold River Secondary.  Aside from being a busy mother and wife I am also very involved in our schools and our community.  I consider myself a joyful, professional volunteer.

I have always volunteered in the schools in whatever capacity was needed. I have done everything from being on PAC, teaching exercise and dance classes, chaperoning field trips, choreographing and helping with Christmas plays and mentoring both high school and elementary school students.

My heart is for the youth and the community.  I think we need to recognize that the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow.  It is up to us as parents, teachers and a community to help shape and mould this generation into respectful, caring, compassionate, confident and educated adults.

I am currently in my fourth year of running our local Youth Program which hosts an average of 38 kids per week.  It is a program that focuses on all these elements.  Having three children in the school system and running this program also gives me an advantage to know what is going on in the schools from their points of view.

I have organized and implemented many community programs and events, such as Gold River Days and Canada Days and volunteer whenever I can.  I believe that everyone needs to be involved in the community you live in. This is where my family is and where my kids are growing up, I want it to be the best it can be.

I believe I have proven my love and care for both the youth and the community through these things wanting to make Gold River a better place.

Ever since my children started in the public school system I have considered myself an involved parent.  I genuinely care what my kids are learning, what they are being exposed to and what they are being taught in and out of the classrooms.  I have watched and learned, I have educated myself in how the school system works.  I have a wide range of experience in the school system.  It is important to me to have good relationships and communication with the teachers and administration.

I am running for School Trustee because I have a vested interest in the school and community.

If I’m elected as School Trustee I will do my best to understand our schools strengths, weaknesses, challenges and demands.  I realize that we are unique and each school has different priorities, needs and resources.

If I’m elected my goal is to go into the schools and speak with teachers and students as well as keeping in touch with the PAC committee’s to better understand the needs, concerns and desires of our two schools.  Having grown up in Tahsis I’m very familiar with small schools and their challenges.

It will also be my mission to make the school a peaceful, comfortable, safe and respectful place to be.  A facility that is conducive to learning and preparing the kids for the future, the best possible learning environment for the students.  As well, I will be helping to maintain good relationships between the staff and community and the best working environment for the teachers and administration.

Good luck to all Trustee Candidates!

Sincerely,

Sheila Bugar

Hola from Puerto Vallarta

Hello all, just a quick update from Mexico.

First off, next time we go somewhere, remind me to bring my laptop, as trying to post on this iPad drives a person to drink! I just don’t get what you Apple lovers see in this thing.

Second, if anyone running for Council, Mayor or School Board wants something posted, please send your little ditty to my personal email, (kyrafiddlerATgmail.com) as I can’t get into the GR Buzz one on this stupid iPad. Also, please make sure what you send is correct, as I will be posting “as is”.

Third, we are all having a great time here in Puerto Vallarta. No one has been arrested yet, contracted Montezuma’s Revenge or broken anything. A few sunburns, and perhaps a sore head or two in the mornings (not me, I promise), so all is good and par for the course at an all inclusive.

Finally, we heard flurries are in the forecast for Gold River! I would make a joke, but that is just not funny for the beginning of November.

Brad Unger Running for Mayor

My name is Brad Unger and I would like to be the next Mayor of Gold River.

For those of you new to the community I’ll give you a brief overview of my history in Gold River. My wife Lynne and 2 year old son David moved here in 1985 when I took the job of Meat Department Manager at Super Valu, our next son, Geoff was born 6 months later. When we moved here Lynne and I discussed that we would stay a couple of years. Once we got involved in our community and the boys were growing up, it was plain to see we were not going anywhere. Why would we? Leave our Gold River lifestyle? No way! Gold River had everything we needed. Today we are very fortunate to have both our sons and their families living here and believe there is nothing better than a close knit family.

I held the position of Meat Manager for many years and through the many transitions I had the opportunity to move into the store Manager position and then in 2002 when the Cyrs’ decided to leave Gold River, Lynne and I bought the store.

During my twenty six years here I have seen and experienced many ups and downs for Gold River. From the beginning I have been involved with the community and worked hard for Gold River on many levels.

Including:

  • Member of the Kinsmen Club and held various Executive and Zone positions for 16 years
  • Director of the Gold River Health Board for two years
  • School District Trustee for six years, Vice Chairman or Chairman for 5 years
  • Executive of the Gold River Minor Hockey Association in various positions for seven years
  • Coach/Manager Gold River Chicks with Sticks Hockey team for six years
  • Executive in various positions 5 years and President for the last two of Gold River Golf Society
  • In 1998 when the mill closed I was part of the Stabilization Committee that worked with the Federal and Provincial Governments that achieved over five million dollars in transition funding for Gold River.

In May of this year when the TD Canada Trust Agency closed in Gold River, I worked tirelessly to attract any/all financial institutions to provide a service in our village. I was finally successful in September attracting RBC to set up a full service bank machine and banking services with RBC personnel attending Gold River regularly to open accounts, set up loans, give investment advice etc.

Gold River is a very special place and has much to offer. We have great sports facilities winter and summer, walking trails, lakes, rivers, Golf Course, and of course, salt and fresh water fishing to name just a few. Many things that we can showcase to the world outside our Village boundaries. I feel the next Council that you elect needs look in “A New Direction” not just the past but into the future. If I am fortunate enough to become your next Mayor I will work together with my fellow Councillors to determine what that future might look like for the benefit of our entire community at many different levels.

If you have any questions about the direction I believe in for Gold River and how I would like to see our community move forward, please call me at home 283-2582, email bunger@cablerocket.com or stop by the Super Valu store for a chat.

Resident Spotlight – Doug Arcus

This resident spotlight is someone many of us met when he came door to door asking our opinions on cell service for the Village. As his Spotlight states, he is also (along with his lovely wife), behind the creation of the much anticipated Luna Marathon. And if that wasn’t enough, he’s running for Gold River Council as well! Thanks so much for agreeing to be spotlighted Doug, it’s wonderful to get to know you better!

How long have you lived in Gold River? What brought you here?

My wife Patricia and I purchased our home in Gold River 2 ½ years ago, planning to retire and live out the remainder of our days here. I retired to live here full time in February.

What do you do for (paid) work?

I still have a few accounts in the north country however, I am now formally retired.

Please tell us about any volunteer work you do.

I currently am busy with The Luna Marathon/Half Marathon (www.lunamarathon.com) a fund raising event to support The Tsu’xiit Luna Whale Museum. My wife and I are founders of the marathon. In September of 2012, the event will feature a film festival, golf tournament, pasta feast and the marathon. I volunteer my expertise and experience as Treasurer, Secretary & Account to Strata 252. I have recently accepted a volunteer position for the upcoming year at The Gold River Golf Course. A few months ago I presented a request to The Village of Gold River Council regarding cellular services. I was asked by the council to conduct a door to door survey to determine public opinion. I am a member of The Nootka Sound Watershed Society and plan to participate when ever called upon.

Please tell us a bit about your family.

My wife Patricia and I have been married for 5 years, we dated for a year long distance (she lived in Oregon and I lived in Fort St John, BC) and then were engaged for one year. We have a combined total of 10 Children, 22 Grandchildren and 1 Great Grandchild. Needless to say we have great places to visit across the USA and Canada.

Do you have any pets?

We have an 11 year old Lhasa Apso named Tashi Nepal Arcus. She is hardly a pet as she has dominion over the human species in our household. Tashi actually talks…..well lets just say she makes all her wishes known and we understand what she is saying.

What do you like to do for fun?

Golf, Golf and more Golf! We have many interests, Patti is the all American NFL aficionado, I have introduced her to hockey so we now flip channels when both are being aired. We love to travel. I have two bikes that allow me to trek on road and off. I have been a marathon runner with over 55 marathons to my credit. I love my local badminton group which meets two times a week.

What do you wish Gold River had that it doesn’t? Is there anything missing for you?

I sincerely wish we had Cellular Service. I would like to see a very active and involved Chamber of Commerce and a full service bank. I wish the members of the community would join forces and write a book filled with photos and personal accounts regarding Tsu’xiit/Luna.

And just for fun – if you had 1 million dollars to donate to the community in any way you wished – what would you do with the money?

One million dollars would build the Tsu’xiit Luna Whale Museum. The museum would feature photos, videos, stories from local residents. Tsu’xitt/Luna’s unique life would live on forever and never be forgotten. The museum would be an international centre for marine research. A theatre (IMAX) in which community events could be held and local thespians’ could practice their craft.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

I absolutely love what I have found here in Gold River and do not want to change the beauty, community spirit and small town atmosphere that exist. That said, I am concerned as to how we can improve the quality of life and prosperity allowing our children to remain here and not look elsewhere for work.
