NSOP Global Citizenship Course

The Nootka Sound Outdoor Program is developing a Global Citizenship course to begin September 2012 for grade 9-12 students.

In a nutshell, this course will focus on all aspects of international trip planning, social responsibility, and cultural awareness of the country to be visited.  The course will introduce students to the concept of global citizenship and what it means to be an informed, responsible and contributing citizen of the world.  This is an experiential based course – meaning that all course work purposely leads toward the international adventure where students will immerse themselves in a humanitarian project.

NSOP will be hosting a parent information evening in June to provide further details of this initiative and answer any questions you may have.

As we start this initiative there are many unknowns, questions and details to work out – part of real world leaning,  In the meantime, if you son or daughter is even remotely interested in participating in this unique opportunity they need to get involved now.

We are starting the fundraising with the opportunity to win a $1000 Home Depot Gift Card.  Tickets are $10 each and draw date is June 28th at 10:00am.

IRLY Garden Centre News

News from the IRLY Garden Centre- by Bridgite Messer

Bedding plants, hanging baskets are here Friday, May 4; Shrubs and trees have arrived!

All bulb and rootstock perennials are 20% off.

Introducing Two new categories of plants:

  1. Supertunias®: A very prolific category that grow faster with less dead heading and many more blooms!
  2. Roses: New this year and arrive on Friday, May 4.  I have selected a variety of hardy roses from a very reliable supplier suited to Gold River’s climate. Don’t be afraid of roses. They are actually very tough and their endless supply of beautiful blooms give any gardener a feeling of great accomplishment. They can survive a lot of abuse and with a bit of vigilance will perform like no other flower in the garden. However, I recommend planting them in a deer free space. Mine are not, and this proves to be challenging – but I still get many blooms even though I have to share the odd one with the deer. My ScareCrow® Motion-Activated Animal Deterrent scares them off after the first nibble so long as the battery is good (lasts about 2-3 months) and the water is turned on. The deer love it when I forget that part.

Summer Hours

Starting on Mother’s Day we will be open 7 days a week: Mon. To Sat. 9am to 5pm. Sunday hours will be 11am to 4pm until June 17, Father’s Day, unless interest dictates otherwise.
