As I mentioned on the Buzz last week, the RCMP Youth Academy is taking place April 7th – 11th at GRSS, with sixteen students from Gold River and Tahsis taking part.
All three of mine are participating (two daughters and one nephew), and it was a mad scramble at our house late this afternoon with last minute packing, checking and then double checking.
Before they left I asked if they would please stand together so I could get a nice picture of them all. The girls complied, but the nephew refused. No amount of begging or pleading helped, so I had to resort to threats. I told him it would be much less painful to stand by the girls and have his picture taken, but he didn’t listen!
I finally caught him at the school and snapped this picture. Doesn’t he look ADORABLE in his beret? I hope the instructors don’t make him take it off.
Enough fun for now, on to the serious stuff!
Mr. Parkes sent a short video of the kids “enjoying” their first night in the Academy. Just watching it made me tired!
Once again we can be proud of our home-grown female hockey players; Taylor Rose, Shaylene Gjesdal and Briana Vandenberg.
Last week the North Island Edge went to Richmond to take part in the 14th Annual Ice Classic Female Hockey Tournament. We are a Bantam ‘A’ division team but due to too few teams registered, Coach Dave Wing suggested that the girls move up a level and compete in the Midget ‘B’ division which was accepted by the tournament coordinators.
On Friday the 25th the girls played their first game at noon against the Surrey Falcons. With goals from Rose and Danielle Poirier of the Comox Valley, the Edge won 2-1. Game two was the following afternoon against the Kamloops Hellcats with a final of 1-1 with Poirier’s second goal of the tournament. In game 3 against the Vancouver Angels, the North Island lights up the board with the first goal of the game with a tip-in by Sarah Kendall of the Comox Valley off of Vandenberg’s one-timer from the blue line. The Angels matched that in the third to which the NIE answered with 4 more by Tara Dickson, Julia Wing and affiliate Peewee Cassidy Bellavance of Campbell River and Kendall. Sunday morning was an early game against the host team, the Richmond Ravens which had not lost a game yet. It was either win or go home. The girls chose to win 1-0 with a shut-out by Gjesdal.
Due to a head to head tie breaker, we were playing the Ravens in the Finals for first and second. The year finally came together for our girls with a momentum that we had seen sporadically throughout the season and we knew they had it in them, but this weekend they brought their ‘A’ game every period of every game. They took the prize home beating the defending champions with another shut-out for Gjesdal after Rose’s wrap around goal in the second and Emily Yates empty-netter in the final 12 seconds to secure the win.
Congratulations to the North Island Edge girls, coaches Dave Wing, Serge Poirier, Dennis Bellavance, manager Ellena Gjesdal and to all the parents that cheered, supported and made this year a successful one.
At the recent SD #84 Community Consultation meeting, those present were given a survey sheet comprised of four questions and asked to fill it out.
District Superintendent, Lawrence Tarasoff presented a short slide show in which themes from November’s consultation meeting were itemized, as well as anticipated enrollment and budget numbers for the 2011/2012 school year. District officials answered questions from the audience, regarding various types calendar years, CUPE concerns and computer system problems.
Both the presentation and the survey are below. Please first take a look at the slide presentation, and then download, print and fill out the consultation question sheet.
The question sheet MUST be returned to the Superintendent no later than Thursday April 7th. You can either drop it off at the School Board office, or email directly to Superintendent Tarasoff at ltarasoff@viw.sd84.bc.ca.
Please note that you must print out the form, fill in by hand, and then scan if you wish to email. (Or if you have better pdf software than I do, you can convert the form and fill it out electronically.)
