SD#84 Community Consultation Meeting tonight!

Yes, I know – another meeting!  I hate meetings just like the rest of you, especially ones that fall on my after dinner couch-and-coffee time.  But this one really is important.

We as parents need to be more informed of what exactly is going on within our School District, and we need to give our feedback and opinions so the Board knows what is important to us in our children’s education.

Currently we have quite the mess regarding the computer system within the District.  GRSS appears to be the hardest hit.  Teachers are having difficulty recording grades and getting report cards entered.  Students enrolled in Distance Learning are finding it near to impossible to succeed in their courses.  Even logging on is a real challenge.  This situation has been going on since September.

What else is going on within the District?  I haven’t a clue as I don’t go to the meetings!

But I’ll be there tonight, and I hope all you concerned parents will be there as well.

The Community Consultation starts at 6:30pm tonight at the School Board Office.

RCMP Youth Academy

The Nootka Sound RCMP, in conjunction with Gold River Secondary School and the Nootka Sound Outdoor Program, will be holding a 5 day long RCMP Youth Academy for students in SD #84 April 7th – 11th.

RCMP Youth Academy’s are held annually throughout Canada, and are designed to provide interested youth with an opportunity to experience police training and partake in police work simulations.

Candidates in Nootka Sound have been chosen based on a stringent selection process conducted by schools and detachments.   Each candidate has already endured (and survived!) a stressful interview, in which they were challenged on their critical thinking skills, judgment, ethics, communication skills, leadership potential, teamwork and more.  Candidates have also passed a rigorous physical test, and have since been presented with their uniforms.

At the end of the experience, candidates have a better sense of whether they wish to continue on to policing as a career or to pursue other professions. Either way, it is a win for the young people and a win for the RCMP.  Upon conclusion of training, the Academy sends out tremendous ambassadors for policing.

The Youth Academy concludes on Monday, April 11th with a graduation ceremony.

The NSOP and the RCMP invite the communities of Gold River and Tahsis to the inaugural RCMP Youth Academy graduation – a one hour ceremony beginning at 2:00 pm in the Gymnasium at GRSS.

Good luck to all participants, and we’ll see you on Monday to celebrate the achievements of our youth leaders!
