The Gold River Greyhawks (aka ‘ The Oldtimers’) will be on the ice again this weekend!
After a near shut-out (4-1) against Campbell River October 4th, the Greyhawks are optimistic and looking forward to taking on the Comox Valley team.
The puck drops at 7:00pm tomorrow night (October 17th) at the Gerry Morgan Memorial Centre. The lounge will be open upstairs, so you can cheer on your Gold River team in a warm room with a nice cold drink!
See you there!
Halloween will be here before we know it, so it’s time to start thinking about that pumpkin. As my kids get older, their Jack-o-Lanterns become more elaborate each year. We discovered stencils a few years ago, and have created some pretty amazing pumpkins this way.
There are oodles of stencils you can use for your pumpkin (as a quick Google will show), but I happened to run across stencils for your favourite dog breed, and thought it was worth sharing.
You can find these free dog breed pumpkin stencils at the Better Homes & Gardens website – everything from Pugs to German Shepherds! They’re absolutely free – just print them out and use as they are, or enlarge on a photocopier. Very cute!
For all stencils, start by cleaning out the pumpkin, scraping the flesh thinnest in the region in which you’ll carve the design. Attach the pattern (enlarged on a photocopier) to the pumpkin with tape. Use a pin to make closely spaced pin pricks along the stencil lines, piercing the paper. Remove the pattern. Cut completely through solid lines (as shown on the stencil), but only peel away the skin within the dotted lines to enhance features.
Check out all the different stencils – have fun and be creative!
I’ll be the first one to admit that I’m not much of a cook, but there are a couple of dishes that earn me rave reviews. My sweet potato casserole is one of them.
It’s more like a dessert than a vegetable dish, and even my vegetable hater loves this one!
I don’t really measure any of the ingredients – I just eyeball and throw stuff in. (And I’m pretty sure I use yams most of the time for this as well.) It’s good with either. Here’s what to do:
Peel and dice two (or however many you think you’ll need) large sweet potatoes (or yams). Cook until tender (like you would for mashed potatoes). Strain water, and dump sweet potatoes into large bowl – add a dollop or two of low fat sour cream, a couple tbsp (or more) of margarine, a healthy amount of brown sugar, and then cinnamon/nutmeg/salt/pepper to taste. Mix with beaters until no lumps remain.
Spoon the mixture into a deep baking dish – make sure there’s still enough room on top for marshmallows! (I will usually make this ahead of time, and then warm it up in the microwave right before I’m ready to melt the marshmallows.) Top generously with either mini or regular marshmallows and place under the broiler until browned. DO NOT walk away from the oven, as it only takes a couple of minutes, and will burn before you know it!
I hope everyone is enjoying a fantastic Thanksgiving weekend!
Dorothy Savey emailed me the other day to let me know that the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation is going to be fund raising for our Gold River hockey teams!
There will be a quarter bingo on Sunday October 25, at the band office on the Tsaxana reserve. Make sure and bring your quarters for the first turnout as they may not have enough coins the first time around to make change.
There will also be a concession so pop/chips/coffee etc., will be available.
Step up and participate by attending the bingo! There will be lots of fun to be had (and maybe a little money too), and all the while helping to support our local hockey.
Boy oh boy – after looking at the photos Annie sent me the other day, I sure know what is going on my Christmas wish list this year!
A Nikon D60 – just like Annie’s!

The second shot of Upper Campbell Lake is nothing short of spectacular. Perhaps if Santa brings me a new camera this year Annie will give me lessons?
There is one special day a year which all ghouls and goblins look forward to. They have been waiting patiently for 364 days in their underground lairs and hidden haunts for the chance to come out and do their wild, crazy dance. Rumour has it that they’re going to be at the Gold River Legion on Friday October 30th
What a coincidence! The Legion is having a Halloween Dance that very night!
Tickets are $5 each and are on sale now at the Legion, the TD Agency and Conuma Cable. The Dance will be held from 9:00pm to 1:00am, with doors opening at 8:00pm. Music by Gold River’s very own ‘Carnivore Chinchillas’.
There will be prizes for best male and female costumes, so get creative, dress up and join in the fun!
Those of you familiar with blogging will know that blogs are most often sprinkled with the personal lives of the authors. Even if it’s a political/food/travel blog – whatever – personal tidbits will pop up.
Having said that, I realize no one really cares what I had for lunch today (Kraft Dinner, btw), but I am finding it difficult not to talk about some aspects of my life. (I’ve been a ‘mommy blogger’ for a number of years, so it’s a hard habit to break!)
I think the old diet mantra, ‘everything in moderation’, can work in this situation.
And so, ‘This & That Thursday’ is born….
- To whoever was setting off firecrackers/fireworks (or whatever that was) yesterday near the high school – my poor four-legged baby didn’t think it was much fun. I found him huddled in a corner in the bedroom trembling.
- I’m debating whether I should throw the dracaena plants in my planters away, or if they’ll survive in the garage until next year?
- I noticed today that Fields already has snow shovels in stock! (BOO)
- Apparently the Gold River Liquor Express is closed. (No matter how much I pulled and kicked at the door, it just wouldn’t open.) My late night trips for red wine are now over! (another BOO)
- My Mother is moving to Gold River for the winter. I’m not sure how I feel about this. We’ve been at least a days drive away from family for 14 years….. there may be some growing pains.
- My main client is finally feeling the money crunch and my contract is on hold for the next month or so.
- I haven’t told the husband yet. Good thing I work from home – he won’t notice a change in schedule! (ha)
….. Happy Thursday Gold Riverites!
Once again Sheila & Jim Bugar are going to do their best to stump the teams at music trivia.
If you have never attended before and are worried because you don’t have a team, fear not! Grab a friend or two and join in the fun, or come solo and hook up with another team. It’s a fresh start this month, so all scores are back to zero and bragging rights are up for grabs! There’s lots of fun to be had – even if you’re not much of a music buff, the shenanigans and good natured ribbing between teams is great entertainment in itself.
Team names are always good for a giggle. If you’re stumped for a good team name, here are a few I like:
- ‘Here Comes Treble’
- ‘Trivia Newton John’
- ‘The Know it Ales’
- ‘ The Alcohooligans’
- ‘A Flock of Canadian Geeks’
- ‘Drinking Team With A Trivia Problem’
- ‘My Harry Potter has Hogwarts’
- ‘Ovary Action’
Music trivia starts at 8:30pm this Friday (Oct 9th) at the Gold River Legion. DJ music and dancing afterward.
