Summer Reading @ VIRL – Gold River

Summer Reading @ Vancouver Island Regional Library Gold River

~Savour each Word~

Reading is like all skills: a little practice goes a long way!

Each summer, VIRL offers a free Summer Reading Club to help children stay on top of this important skill while they are out of school.  Summer Reading Club motivates kids to read by providing:

  • Materials so kids can track their reading success
  • prizes
  • reading records
  • stickers
  • a website with a literacy game and other reading related information and activities.
  • Medals for all children who complete a reading record.
  • Awards ceremonies at the branch to celebrate Summer Readers’ successes.
  • Supportive library staff to help kids enjoy reading.

We offer three programs for different grade levels:

  • Summer Reading club for K to Grade 7
  • Read to Me for preschoolers
  • Teen Summer Reading Club online for readers 13 and up at www.teensrc.ca

In 2010 our Gold River readers logged 7322 chapters, reading sessions and/or titles, an increase of more than 2,000 over the 2009 total of 5348.

Signup starts on Sat June 25, 2011 and continues through the summer.

News from IRLY Garden Centre

As the bedding plant season is coming to an end, we are focusing on other areas of gardening: shrubs, trees, mulches, lawn care, tools, fertilizers, and keeping the weeds and bugs in check.

We have a new supply of plastic pots, various wall art, decorative trellises, bistro tables and more new stock on the way!

Our last Sunday open will be June 26, resuming the regular hours of Gold River Builder Supplies: 9am-5pm Monday to Saturday, closed on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Summer can be  very busy, but let’s all take time to enjoy our gardens!  Thank you again to all our customers for your support.

FYI: Deb’s Pet Grooming

Deb would like everyone to know that she’s in transit at the moment, having moved to a new residence.  She is not able to continue to receive messages at her old phone number, but her phone will be installed at her new place sometime this week.

Anyone wishing to get in contact with her in the meantime is asked to email her at kismet256@hotmail.com, or send a message through Facebook.

She will let everyone know when Telus has hooked her back up! :)

Rosie the Robin Webcam

Lee Yateman and Gwen Gardner have collaborated to bring Gold River it’s very first live animal webcam!

‘Rosie’ the Robin has decided the hanging planter in Gwen’s carport is the perfect place to make a nest and raise a family.

Add the expertise of Lee, and we have a front row seat to watch Rosie in her nest.

Click here to see Rosie in her nest.  The feed is a little slow, but it does update every minute or so, or you can click the refresh button in the top left.

Lee reports that there was just one egg two days ago, and as of yesterday there are now two eggs!

Go Rosie Go!

THANK YOU MENTORS!

Ray Watkins Elementary School and Gold River Secondary School wish to express their heartfelt thanks to the many wonderful people of Gold River who have acted as mentors and friends to our students.

You have inspired our young people, comforted them, guided them, and had fun with them.  You have had walks, talks and treats with them.  You have baked cookies, brownies, and gingerbread houses.  You have made potato salad!  You have done crafts, made necklaces, bracelets,  and pretty bags.  You have played board games, made play dough and done math.    You have painted,  sewed,  and gone shopping.  You have done fun things on the computer, helped in the classroom, and done healing work.  You have read and written poetry.  You have assisted our young mothers and mothers-to-be.   You have played games and  played the piano, the drums, the violin.  You have shared food!   You have even run around the track and done exercise!

Mentors – you rock!  So thank you to…
