New Highway Cam

If you frequent the Drive BC website, you may have noticed a new live webcam for Highway 28 between Campbell River and Gold River.

We all know that the weather and road conditions can often change dramatically on our highway, but it’s great to check out before heading into Campbell River.

Gold River Food Bank Thanks You

via Rob Hoffman

Thanks, Gold River, for your continued generosity. I am no longer surprised but again proud of our community. Thanks to you, this past year we have been able to assist everyone who has come for a little help in their time of need. If you have ever been in such need (as I have been myself) you know what that “little bit of help” can mean. We want to thank Brad Unger and SuperValu for working with us so closely all year long, as well as the many community and school groups who help supply the bank, often in very creative ways (if you would like to know how a pizza can be turned into a can of veggies for the bank ask Mr. Levering at GRSS sometime). And naturally I want to thank Heather Warwick, who for many, is the face of the Food Bank. She works tirelessly to make things work. Thank you Heather.

At this point in time, even following the Christmas Hamper distribution, your bank has food on the shelves and some money in the (other kind of) bank. Thus, as usual, there are no planned food drives in the near future, but your regular till tape and food donations are always welcomed. Your help is appreciated by those you have helped – nameless though they be.

And never forget, if you have even a small need for food assistance, or know someone who does, please contact myself or Heather. There’s help, and it’s confidential.

Thank you all and Merry Christmas everyone! God bless! Happy New Year!

Christmas/Winter Odds & Sods

My bookmark folder is overflowing (thanks to Pinterest), so I thought I would do a little bit of early Spring cleaning and share some of the neat Christmassy ideas I’ve found.

Blow Frozen Bubbles – we haven’t tried this one yet, (although we’ve had ample opportunity) but it seems like a neat way to keep the kids busy on a cold day outdoors.

As long as the temperature is below zero, the bubbles will freeze and shatter when they fall to the ground!

Make a puffy snowman:  Use equal parts white glue and shaving cream.

Easy outdoor (or indoor) Christmas tree:  Wrap wire tomato cages in lights, flip upside down – voila!

A different type of wreath for your door:  An old picture frame (painted to your liking) ribbon for a bow and a few Christmas decorations!  Easy peasy!

Here’s an easy popsicle stick craft for your door – simple and pretty!

Here’s a neat way to make snowflakes – dip the end of an evergreen branch in white paint!

A great recipe for Christmas morning:  North Pole Strawberry Smoothie

INGREDIENTS:

1 package (10 oz) frozen strawberries in syrup, partially thawed and undrained
1/4 cup water
2 cups vanilla frozen yogurt
2 tablespoons vanilla reduced-fat yogurt
1 strawberry-flavored or peppermint candy cane, finely crushed
Green decorating gel

DIRECTIONS:

1. Place strawberries and water in blender. Cover and blend on medium-high speed until slushy. Blend on medium speed until smooth. Transfer to 2-cup measure.

2. Wash and dry blender. Place frozen yogurt and reduced-fat yogurt in blender. Cover and blend on medium speed until smooth.

3. Place crushed candy cane on small plate. Pipe decorating gel around rim of two 12-ounce glasses. Dip rims into crushed candy.

4. Carefully pour yogurt mixture and strawberries at the same time into glasses, creating a half-and-half design. Serve with large drinking straws if desired.

Last but not least, don’t forget the free site Magic Santa.

You can personalize a video where the big guy himself receives your child’s Christmas letter!
