This year a new female bantam hockey league has started on the Island with 3 Bantam A teams; the South Island Breakers, the Mid Island Extreme and the Brown’s Bay Packing North Island Edge.
The Edge is comprised of players from Courtenay, Campbell River and Gold River. After two weeks of tryouts, 16 players were chosen for their skill and dedication to the game after making some hard releases. The host association for the north is CRMHA with ice to be used for practices in Courtenay and Gold River also. Exhibition games are underway while the official league schedule is finalized after the Thanksgiving weekend.
The Edge got off to a great start with two wins on the weekend. The first in Parksville Saturday against he Extreme and the second at Rod Brind’Amour Arena Sunday against the Breakers.
The first game against the Extreme started out with the first goal after five minutes of play by Brooklyn Rothwell after receiving quick passes from Sarah Kendall and Megan Grant. Mid Island then tied the game up, but Edge captain, Sarah Kendall, gave her team a 2-1 lead early in the final period, assisted by Tara Dickson.
The Extreme battled back to tie the game once again only to have Kendall net the game winner with less than three minutes to play in the 3-2 Edge win. Julia Wing assisted on the goal.
On home ice Sunday the Edge skated to an impressive 4-1 win over the South Island Breakers.
Taylor Rose netted the first goal, assisted by Rothwell with the first period ending in a 1-1 tie.
Tara Dickson and Elaine Drewry each scored in the second assisted by Kendall and Briana Vandenberg respectively.
Taylor Buell in Edge goal faces her first penalty shot and makes the save to preserve the 3-1 lead.
Kendall then scores her third goal of the weekend for the 4-1 final.
This weekend North Island heads to Victoria to play a rematch against the South Island Breakers on Saturday and then at home they play an exhibition game against the No. 2 Port Alberni Midget C female team.
