This Resident Spotlight features someone we met soon after we moved here (the first time) in 2003. He is always there to lend a helping hand, constantly has a smile on his face and does a lot in the way of volunteering for our community.
How long have you lived in Gold River? What brought you here?
I have lived in Gold River for 50 years. When we first moved to Gold River it was called the beach camp, and that is where the Pulp Mill is sitting now. In 1968 we moved from the beach camp to the new site of Gold River. My Dads job is what brought us here.
What do you do for (paid) work?
I work for Western Forest Products and my present job is a Grader Operator.
Please tell us about any volunteer work you do?
I volunteer my time to the local R.C.M.P. Detachment as an Auxiliary Constable. I also volunteer my time with the Gold River Community Policing Volunteer Program, as well as the Gold River Restorative Justice Program. I will also drive School Bus for field trips when needed.
Please tell us a bit about your family.
I have been married to Kathy for 31 years, and we have one son Dillon who is 18 and will be off to University in Nanaimo come September.
We have two little white ankle biters, Dozer and Squirt, and a love bird.
What do you like to do for fun?
My favourite pastimes are to be with my family, horseback riding, bowling, ATV riding and putting time in with the R.C.M.P.
What do you wish Gold River had that it doesn’t? Is there anything missing for you?
I would like rural land so I can bring horses back into my life. A bowling alley and a pool hall would be nice here. Just a few more things to do would be nice.
And just for fun- if you were invisible, where would you go/ what would you do?
I would love to take my family on a train ride across Canada. (Got to do things as a family or nothing…)
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
I have been in Gold River for a long time, and I have seen bad times but there have definitely been lots more good times.
Is it just me, or has Kathy not aged one little bit?! Thanks so much for taking part Doug – it was a pleasure highlighting you!
