Update on Scout & Antler Lakes

Danielle Lapointe sent this update to the Gold River Buzz this evening – I’m passing it along so that we are all kept current on this issue:

Hello all,

Apologies for the long delay in news regarding the Antler Lake logging. However, I am happy to report that there is mostly good news to pass along. A Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) has been signed between WFP and various provincial government ministries, that WFP will partake in a land swap of Antler and Scout Lake areas for other forest of equal value. This will preserve Antler and Scout Lake areas from being logged. A MOU is not quite a sealed deal, and things may still go awry, but at this point we can celebrate that our backyard old growth trees and recreational areas will remain standing. Thank you to everyone for writing letters and making noise, it obviously helped.

Along with this celebration, we must also grieve the loss of some beautiful old growth giants along the back section of Antler Lake that were fallen before the MOU was signed. They will be a reminder of what might have happened to the whole area slated to be logged. Much work will be needed to clean up the back side of the Antler Lake trail, and we hope that WFP will prioritize cleaning up the logging show portion.

At a local level, we are not ‘in the loop’ anymore regarding the details of the MOU, but if there is more news, I will pass it on.

Thank you again for your energy, voice and vision.
